Ideas before desires
TheLittleSongbird1 April 2021
Despite being one of the worst-received episodes of Season 6 and of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic', the Cutie Mark Crusaders are always watchable and far more interesting than their names sound and have had some good episodes centered around them. They also have had some great interactions with their older sisters (all interesting characters, though Applejack's characterisation and episodes are inconsistent) frequently in all the seasons. And the premise is good.

One that is wasted by pretty sloppy execution. "The Cart Before the Ponies" is semi-watchable for one character in particular and the Cutie Mark Crusaders actually do come over well as characters. It's how they are treated and the characterisation of the older ponies that are less tasteful and other episodes of the season (one of the show's most hit and miss ones) and the show have far more compelling stories and superior writing. Can understand the negative reputation for "The Cart Before the Ponies", while not considering it irredeemable.

"The Cart Before the Ponies" has redeeming qualities certainly. The animation is full of vibrant colour, polished and expressive character designs (that aspect has come on a fair bit since the show first started) and elaborately designed backgrounds. The background music is dynamic with the characters' actions and emotions and the placement is never questionable. The voice acting is fine, Kazumi Evans shines here.

Really liked Cherilee here, no make that love. She manages to be the most likeable and most mature character in the whole of "The Cart Before the Ponies", the one that makes the most sense and one who actually listens. The Cutie Mark Crusaders' personalities keep getting more endearing and interesting all the time and had no problem with their characterisations here.

Something that cannot be said for how they are treated, especially by the characters that should have listened to and respected their desires the most, really don't like it when the Cutie Mark Crusaders are treated cruelly whenever something bad happens and while not quite one of the worst cases that is the case here. Like many fans, the characterisation of the older ponies is some of the worst of the entire show. Despite being a fan of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic', at least one episode of every season made the mistake of emphasising too much negative characteristics and they do that with all three of the older sisters. Applejack's stubborness and aggression, Rainbow Dash's arrogance and full of herself-ness and Rarity's (the least bad because she at least had moments where she actually wasn't out of character) self-centered-ness are all taken to quite insulting extremes and one really hates how they put themselves over the needs of their own sisters with knowledge of what they want.

Was not really taken with the song or message either. Season 6 was very mixed when it came to its songs, and "Derby Racers" is one of the worst. It's not just forgettable or lyrically uninspired and charmless but it also blatantly shows how out of control the behaviour is and lays that on too thick while not acknowledging it as a bad thing. The message is another one that conceptually was good but sloppily executed. Too rushed, too obvious, too preachy and it would have been much more believable if the Cutie Mark Crusaders were not treated as cruelly and if the sisters were not written so excessively negatively. The story is very bland and predictable with a too hastily wrapped up ending, while the writing takes itself too seriously and is both corny and mechanical.

Overall, a misfire of an episode and one of Season 6's worst. 4/10.

Did the writer suddenly just lose his expertise writing skills from Season 4?

Warning: Spoilers
With his phenomenal work with both Flight to the Finish and Three's A Crowd, writer Ed Valentine has gained both my hype and my hope for writing more episodes for Season 6. Having writing for the Crusaders in their first Season 4 episode (before Discord's second normal- lengther with Meghan McCarthy), it was simply amazing showing true determination for them (to represent the nation for the win) and developed them really well to deliver a stunning moral across the board. Looking at The Cart Before the Ponies overtime now, it seemed to me that it was only dumb luck that Valentine wrote wonderfully for the Crusaders back in Season 4. Because at the end of the day, this episode just goes to show that some writers just lose their mojo instantly overtime...much like Josh Haber before Season 5.

Unlike Flight to the Finish, The Cart Before the Ponies falls flat on its face due to bad pacing within its mostly predictable plot. It's hard to focus on any of the actual charm of the episode thanks to how Valentine wrote the sisters of the CMCs with nothing going as plan which only made that plot even more predictable after just learning of the episode's description before it aired. With its sound design the voices were suited greatly for every character as with every episode, but it also suffers with a corny script from our main adult characters with the Crusaders. As for the music, eventually I found to be completely forgettable (despite my own strong memory for anything I give more than one viewing or listen to). And don't me wrong with the visuals and design, cause I found it so pleasing that it's practically like the Mario Kart of My Little Pony episodes ever since I first viewed it. But just because something looks so cool doesn't mean you should judge it only by it's cover.

Generally, not all the acting is bad as the Cutie Mark Crusaders were the most mature and Cheerilee's was admirable as well if not quite as powerful as the Crusaders in which, like Bridle Gossip, it seemed that only the kids were intelligent with the exception of her (go figure) in which they weren't blind to how bad the first race entirely turned out. Rainbow Dash's, Rarity's, and Applejack's (which her's has also been done before in Somepony to Watch Over Me) on the other obvious hand suffer heavily from sloppy writing and immature selfish acts like 90% of the episode with a failed and forced moral on the Crusaders from them that most of the time was unbelievably unreasonable with the sisters having a comeuppance that was a little too rushed, not to mention predictable like the rest of the plot. So in the end, The Cart Before the Ponies sadly failed to give its concept a good storyline and just messed up part of the sisters' reputations for their relationships with their sisters, but since he's got at least one more shot at this season before whatever comes of him later on, I'll end this by saying better luck next time, Valentine.

Not the best, but still good

Warning: Spoilers
I admit that this wasn't that good of an episode, but it's still quite nice! I guess I'm just used to loving every episode. This is still worth looking at, because it does feature an original plot. It has the Cutie Mark Crusaders entering a soapbox derby. No, not a soapbox Derpy, but we do get to see Derpy partake in this. She even appears as defeating Rarity in a flashback! I really do like how adorable these characters look. Are those bullies that keep appearing in Rainbow Dash's flashbacks ever given names? I really was eager to see how this story would plan out.

I thought maybe they would all switch their cars or maybe they would all win the different awards. This was interesting how we didn't see how the race itself ended. It seems like Twilight herself is being faded out more and more in recent episodes. I guess I just want Pinkie Pie to appear. It just seems like this episode didn't accomplish much but it still had the great animation and a fairly unique story. Even the moral is pretty unique. ***
