First-time director clearly carried by more experienced crew
jjjvviru18 December 2017
Watched this film as part of Blood in the Snow 2017. It's an okay film but suffers from a lot of mistakes that first-time directors seem to make.

The story itself claims to be based on true events, but I can find no news sources that point to a story like this ever happening. Overall, the script is somewhat weak and the pacing of the story is too slow in the first half, while the ending feels rushed. It almost seems like this film was shot from the first or second draft. As Phillips is credited as the sole writer, it seems she suffers from the hubris that many directors do where they envision their story as precious and are reticent to make any changes.

Looking at the crew attached, I get the feeling that the successful completion of the film relied heavily on Phillips' more experienced crew during production, including 1stAD Jake O'Neill and line producer Emily Schooley, and the post-production team at Post City Sound. Much of a film is made during post-production and this seems to be the case here. The visual effects in the film appear to be all practically done, which at least is a refreshing change from overly CGIed films. The music is a bit over the top and often telegraphs the few scares before they happen, but is fairly solid overall. As for the cinematography, there are a few interesting shot choices and some nice detail shots of their creepy location, but overall they are pretty standard for indie horror films.

If anything, what kind of put me off of the film was the acting. The lead character Ashley is simply not a strong actor. She is thin and good looking (and that's probably why she was cast for the lead) but a lot of her performance is flat and telegraphed. The film would have been far more interesting with a stronger lead, even if she wasn't as conventionally attractive. Most of the rest of the characters are pretty unlikeable and/or downright annoying, which also takes away from the enjoyment of the film. The actual Blood Child was kind of cute when she wasn't scary, though it seems like this film was banking on the child-being-scary as part of its thrills.

Watch it if it's on Netflix and you're bored, but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.

Interesting idea, amateur-like movie
schaumie-3508927 April 2019
Read the story and found it interesting. The movie introduced it's idea nicely. These are the positive things to tell. D.O.P. seldom caught good shots, dialouges and their pacing very often don't work, some actors overacted, some were flat. Director and D.O.P. need more experience and the movie needs a remake, cause of the interesting story-idea. Maybe in a few years by the same team...?!

Samething over and over

If you're scared of a little girl in a red dress appearing in the background of a boring movie you can try it. It's a really played out rhythm of a horror film. Nothing happens, nothing happens, spooky music, quick jump scare of a girl in a dress, girl disappears, people make excuses for seeing the ghost girl, repeat ad nauseam. The acting and camera work is amateurish at best but work. Honestly though the story is just so repetitive that there's really nothing to enjoy. It's a very cheesy rip off of the movie Malicious which is much better. Everyone constantly yelling at the maid drove me mad. Not worth it.

Bellow average horror with a boosted rating
bastian-kreuzer19 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Over 80% of people who rated this movie gave it at least a 9 out of 10 stars. That means that they think this movie is Oscar worthy. Or at least that it is one of the best horror/thrillers ever made. If you watch 5 minutes of the movie you will see that this is completely untrue. Good job on the fake rating, crew and whoever else was involved. It should be at least 2 or 3 points lower.

I'm calling BS on the whole based on a true story myth. At least it didn't happen the way the movie portrays the story. Its about a ghost child who feeds on blood and shows itself through phones and computers. It is responsible for a few deaths as well. Gimme a break.

Everything about this movie screams average or bellow average. The direction, cinematography, editing. It definitely has the look of a low budget or a TV movie. Most of the movie is shot in a house and it looks very bland and boring. Like a soap opera.

The plot, the script, the acting...The movie is filled with B or C list actors that no one has ever seen or heard of before. The female lead is not up to her task. She whimpers away with her annoying voice through the entire movie. It was just a weak character. The male lead is just a generic man character. They have zero chemistry between them. The other actors get lost in the blandness. The characters are all pretty much generic and overall unlikable so I didn't care what happened to them at all. The only one who stands out is the maid Siti who gets to speak in an accent and is the only likeable character in the movie.

The blood child is a blonde little girl in a red dress who pops out from time to time to scare people. The only problem here is that the blood child isn't scary at all. She's just a bit pale and blotchy. So the whole horror aspect of the plot goes out the window. Not that I found the plot that intriguing anyway. Its a standard slow moving ghost child story. It is filled with gaping holes and contrivances that push it to the climax. I guess the one good thing I can say about the overdone twist ending is that Siti, the maid who is treated like crap by everybody, is the only one that survives.

I guess I just wanted to say that it is not as good as the rating suggest. It is not good at all is my personal opinion. You've been warned.

Very disapointing
taktloss-136-36610820 October 2019
This is my first review after 8 years . I do this to warn you. This Movie is one of the worst of maybe the worst movie that i have ever seen. I have seen it to the end just because I found it funny how bad it is. Some scenes looks like a parody. Scary Movie 6 can take the original Scenes from this movie.

Abhorrent film discriminated towards Asian and Asian culture
vivian-4815113 March 2022
I was initially attracted to watch this film by the description and it's 5.8 rating on IMDB. Half way through the movie, I couldn't stand how rude and racist some of the comments about asian and asian culture. Actors are acting so bad like a school play is another factor I have to abort to finish watching it. Please save yourself time and find some other better horror films that don't belittle other culture to make you scare.

Not too shabby

Original premise, but for the rest standard horror cliches. Decent acting and a good build up of mystery and atmosphere. Far from great, but not too shabby.

Ghost children feeding on blood? Got me interested.
BandSAboutMovies13 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
You know what gets me to watch a movie every single time? Based on a true story. Nothing makes me want to watch something more. That's what drew me to Blood Child, which is based on the Malay myth of the Toyol, which are ghost children raised by black magic.

After a devastating miscarriage in Singapore, Ashley turned to a witch doctor to start the process of raising a ghost child that would help her discover the spirit of her lost baby. This tragedy brings her and husband Bill back to the United States where his friends are amazed that he stayed faithful to her in a foreign country filled with beautiful women.

Soon, the couple finds themselves pregnant again, but their joy doesn't last long. That ghost child - or the spirit of their lost baby - will not come in second place to a living child. And what about Siti, their housekeeper, who has come back with them, creeping out all of their friends?

What really struck me about the film is the incredibly casual misogyny of Bill's friends toward his marriage and wife's mental state. "You just need to get laid" seems to be their solution to a spouse in major need to support. And everyone in the film has no issue at all being racist toward Siti, who is one of the few sympathetic characters in the film.

I also enjoyed the fact that the spirit in this film chooses technology to make its presence known. In moments of physical interaction, some of the characters turn to stare into their screens, such as when a girl attempts to seduce Bill in a bar. Instead of enjoying that moment - when he shouldn't be - he starts to film it and instead of watching her giving him a sexual favor in digital POV, he's greeted with the face of evil.

The film marks the directorial debut of Jennifer Phillips, who is also the film's writer and producer. The film looks way better than most current VOD features and while some performances aren't as good as others, it's a decent first effort - minus the surprise ending, which feels a little tacked on.

As is typical in horror films, people don't always behave like you or I would in these situations. When a voice tells me to get out, I get out! I also know better than to try and raise a ghost child, but then again, as far as I know, I am not a character in a horror movie.

Stand out actor, really cool gory blood
rachel_rific21 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Watched this at Blood in the Snow, 2017. Thoroughly enjoyed the story, the overall look of the film, and the characters. Especially Siti! Holy crap, the character was the right amount of serious/funny/spooky/secret keeper. The special blood effects were realistic and gory.

Overall, I recommend this movie if you are into creepy movies. I can't wait to see what Jennifer Phillips does next!

Dreadful

None of these "actors" can act. Hopefully they have other jobs. This is a terrible, boring movie. I gave it 45 minutes then got out of it.

Please do not watch.

Not every movie has a happy ending
exiled_human16 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Well, it started a bit interesting but all of a sudden it just gets boring as hell. the only thing that kept me going was the fact that i had actually started watching it and wanted to know if something good turns out ... its too over rated on imdb.. there is nothing special about the movie. the acting is too unrealistic. one point they are talking about something , the next moment they are talking about something else. just doesn't make sense.. the actress is too chill during the whole movie, kinda pisses one off. i mean so much is going around and yet she is all unrealistic. the ending was so crappy. all of a sudden you make everyone disappear by a made up story of fire.. huh .. too bad . wasted my night.
