- A groomsman must navigate a slew of disasters to maintain order at his best friend's wedding reception.
- Paul and Margene have been in a relationship since high school. He has a job which is threatened by changes at his company and she is a fourth-grade teacher. At the start of the movie, the audience hears Pastor Kyle officiating at their wedding ceremony in Oklahoma (probably Tulsa) while watching the credits on a dark background with no video of the ceremony. This includes a very modern translation of I Corinthians 13. Finally, the audience sees the wedding happening, and as the couple walk down the aisle afterward, she things everything went perfectly, while bridesmaids and groomsmen are arguing.
At the reception, the meal is buffet style. Paul and Margene are about to get their food when Aunt Sylvia tells them they need to talk to her and that she waited an hour for the ceremony to start. With so many people to talk to, the couple have this one chance to see Aunt Sylvia and are later shown without food. Bethanie, a bridesmaid, is one of the first in line and while she doesn't want fish, the chicken has not arrived. Later is revealed the fish went bad.
Alex is in charge and always carrying a binder, and she makes sure everything is happening as it should be. Which it frequently is not. Alex is an engineer and a yoga teacher and gets annoyed when people focus on the fact she is a yoga teacher. Her plus one was supposed to be Zeb but they are on a break. He comes anyway, and the former athlete, who now makes big money working in the gas industry, acts like the jerk he is. Jim, Paul's best friend, who sang and performed in dramas in high school, took Alex to prom and wants to get back with her.
Colt is Paul's half brother and the best man, but Paul would have rather chosen Jim. And Margene's ring is stuck on Colt's finger. Colt gives a speech which isn't very dignified, but that's nothing compared to the unintelligible mess coming from Greta, who is already drunk. Greta continues to have embarrassing moments throughout the movie.
When the time comes to dance, Paul and Margene still haven't eaten and they can't even dance because it's time for the father-daughter dance. Margene's father paid for everything, so naturally Margene has to dance with him.
There are several problems with the cake. The African-American baker didn't know in time he was supposed to make a cake for this wedding, so he is behind schedule decorating, and he is told it is the wrong cake. Not only is it not red velvet, but it has a Black couple on top. The baker is not pleased with the proposed solution. Later, when the cake is finished, the man in charge of catering has decided to go on strike and two of the guests try to bring it out and end up dropping it.
Paul and Margene have to separate to be able to speak with everyone in order to leave in time to make their plane. Paul ends up being called a moron by her father, who also thinks most of the wedding party are morons. But he does have encouraging words.
Skyler has several negative experiences with women. He is nice enough but awkward. An older woman, probably the one called Kit the Cougar in the credits, hits on him even though she is married. Later he is making out on the tennis court with Lisa, who got in an argument with Quentin and wanted to make him jealous. It is around this time that Colt celebrates that he got the ring off and Greta swallowed it. Also, Bethanie is feeling the effects of the fish she ate.
The reception continues to have problems until finally Paul and Margene realize they can leave quietly. They realize in spite of all the problems they have had, they will make it. Colt does a terrible solo with the band.
