Synopsis

  • Provence, the sixties. A Dutch couple arrives in the medieval mountain village of Les Cordeliers. Thomas (Emmy Award winner Pierre Bokma) is an extremely wealthy man, Nathalie (prominent Dutch actress Sytske van der Ster) is his beautiful young wife. After ten years of marriage, they are still madly in love.

They both know the village of Les Cordeliers well: ten years earlier they celebrated their fairy tale wedding there. Now, they've returned, to reminisce and relax.

But when they walk onto the village square, the village seems deserted. The atmosphere is shadowy. Thomas starts exploring the village on his own, and while wandering around meets an elderly man in medieval-looking clothes. Before the man can inform Thomas why the village is deserted, an arrow buzzes through the air and the man drops dead.

Thomas runs back to Nathalie to bring her to safety. But Nathalie is no longer at the village square. Only her leather suitcase is still there. Thomas runs through the village streets and shouts her name, but finds no trace of life. Then, suddenly, a hand pulls Thomas into a dark house, where a number of ominous Frenchmen are waiting for him.

It turns out that Nathalie was kidnapped by Les Jacobins, a neighboring village with which the Cordeliers have been feuding for centuries. The Jacobins recently stole a statue called The Blue Virgin from the Cordeliers church, and the Cordeliers are now preparing to retrieve the statue one way or the other. They force Thomas to choose: if he ever wants to see his wife again, he will have to side with the Cordeliers in this feud. Thomas agrees. But what he puts on the line only becomes clear when it is too late.
