- Thanks to strong cultural links to the West dating back to the 60s, music in then Yugoslavia was influenced by scenes in Western Europe, the UK and the States. Blues, Soul, Rock and New Wave bands started emerging from cities like Belgrade, Zagreb and Sarajevo. It was no surprise that as Rap started to go global the genre was embraced by a small group of urban kids of Yugoslavia. Still in its infancy in mid-80s, the Hip Hop scene was relegated to the underground. The first recorded albums in local languages did not appear until the 90s. From that point, Hip Hop really took off! The documentary Nothing in our Way presents the pioneers and leading figures off the Balkan scene chronicling the history and development of Hip Hop. Hip Hop stars Gru, General Woo, Bizzo, Baby Dooks, Remi, Koolade, Reksona, Marelo, Edo Maajka, Frenkie, Kontra, Ikac, Struka, Shorty i Oneya, radio presenters DJs Slavin Balen, Phat Phillie, Frx , Soul and Munja along with music journalist Miko Bilbija, describe how they first encountered Hip Hop culture pushing them to pick up a mic and started to 'throw rhymes', the struggles to get the rhymes on tape and the tape into the hands of their fans... Fans that have been on the Hip Hop journey with the artists from the beginning. The documentary also follows a group of Rap artists from Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia coming together to produce a track commemorating 20 years of 'domestic' Rap. In just a few months of the Spring of 2014, Reksona, General Woo, Gru, Marelo, Frenkie, Remi, Baby Dooks and Kontra, with the guiding hand of DJ Phat Phillie, came together using the beats of Koolade and recorded a song in the legendary Morris studio in Zagreb. The track, Nothing In Our Way, is the first regional Hip Hop song to be produced since the breakup of Yugoslavia. Whereas their songs talk about their view of life, in this documentary the artists open up to how these giants of Balkan Hip hop see their own careers and the rap scene itself.
