When the crew decides to start scanning different radio channels each day for sign of life they don't wait for a response on previous channel. They wait for the radio to connect and rapidly goes to next frequency's.
When loading the howitzer as the unmanned ship approaches, the shells clearly have no primers or projectiles. They are just empty cases, unable to fire.
Earlier on they needed two keys to activate the machine, yet near the end he only used one key.
