The Seynaeve Case
Tweekums21 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens Inspector Annelies Donckers is preparing to give a talk to Professor T's class. She talks about the ongoing case of Dirk Seynaeve. It appears to be an open and shut case; his employer had been shot and he was found in the room along with the murder weapon and some stolen items were discovered in his house… then Professor T interrupts to state that he believes the man is innocent! He then sets about proving this. While this is going on there is another investigation going on at the police station; Paul is being investigated for assaulting the fellow officer who had accused him of murder in a recent episode.

I rather enjoyed this episode; the fact that it was centred on proving an accused man innocent rather than trying to find a killer, although inevitably the identity of the killer is revealed, made a bit of a change. There were plenty of good moments in the court room and in Professor T's lecture room as he made some interesting observations about opinions, including his own. More suspects are raised throughout the case and ultimately we get a very satisfactory conclusion that will leave most viewers sympathising with the killer. The investigation into Paul's previous behaviour was entertaining too; especially as his colleagues downplay what he did then he confronts his accusers. As always the central cast does as fine job; most notably Koen De Bouw, Ella Leyers and Herwig Ilegems as Professor T, Annelies and Paul. Overall this was a fun episode.

A strong episode with the usual quirks as well as a new case and looking back into previous stories plus Daan and Annalies finally get up close and intimate.

Interesting Episode

Warning: Spoilers
We're at an interesting juncture in this series. IMHO, the writing is simultaneously sinking and rising.

First of all, I could have done without the extended lovemaking scene. I fast-forwarded through that. If I wanted to watch couples jumping into bed at the drop of a hat, I would watch a Danish or Swedish crime show.

Having Annelies Donckers give ongoing college lectures was a great "rite of passage" segment. I'm guessing she'll be given more responsibility in the future.

Once again we have a plot that suggests supposed "victims" can often be the perpetrator. This has been a consistent theme and it gives the show credibility and integrity.

Especially enjoyed the cheerleader skit at the end. It was SO absurd, it actually fit.

And we'll always treasure Christina Flamant's timeless advice: "Next time, when someone thanks you, just say 'thanks' back."

Words to live by.
