The intertwined nature of media, violence, and place creates a memory and a story that is told through film. The sights and sounds of cinema, the absurd nature of abuse, and the tense anger of imprisonment will be presented in a documentary film that works to be a place film, a memory film, and a family film. This project will be an attempt to untangle the memories of my childhood, one wherein I experienced the violence of the cinema, the abuse of a parent, and exposure to the violent residents of a maximum-security prison. With a theoretical structure provided by media studies and documentary film scholars, the film will contain archival footage, re-mixed Hollywood cinema, and new footage shot on location. The final project will be a journey through the past, the present, and perhaps offer a glimpse of the future.
