- Edward Barbary is facing financial ruin and Scrooge adds to his predicament by demanding to have his loan repaid. Amelia is devastated by the loss of Jip, but then Compeyson surprises her with a present and a declaration.
- Bucket switches the focus of his enquiry to Fagin whilst the Bumbles await their guest and Compeyson charms Amelia with a false sob story. Barbary's financial situation worsens as Scrooge demands his money back and when Barbary fails to deliver the goods sends him to the debtors' prison. Edward Barbary can't find temporary relief from his dire financial plight, failing to repay Scrooge's loan. Compeyson buys Amelia a new dog, but too soon and she questions his mercurial nature, he claims turbulent love for her and concocts being jilted at the altar to gain Amelia's sympathy, she accepts the dog; they kiss. Nell hints to Peter a gift for her birthday. Preparing Mr Gradgrind's visit in style, Mrs Bumble purchases a globe, new china, new cutlery and new coal. Sikes tells Nancy he wants only her. Wegg exaggerates reciprocating Mrs Gamp's attentions. James Hawdon meets Edward Barbary, but Honoria's father thinks little of the captain's prospects. A £5 reward for information about Marley's is offered by posting in the neighborhood. Edward is taken away to debtors' prison as Scrooge shows patience nor mercy.—KGF Vissers
