He also intervenes when Arthur is about to expose him to Matthew but is too spineless to tell Honoria of the plot. - Edward tells Bucket that he sold his late wife's ring to Fagin at the docks to pay off his debt to Marley that night, around 8 or 9 o'clock. Sikes won't to pay Fagin £50 for Nancy. Desperate Arthur was about to tell Matthew being the grips of Compeyson when the man himself arrives and pretends all's well. Matthew leaves inviting both to Sunday lunch with Amelia, who still wishes him back home. Compeyson reminds Arthur he can ruin him as he knows his secret. Frances gives her father an provable alibi: carolers visited at 9:40. Noting Matthew's puppy-bond with Amelia, Compeyson successfully inspires Matthew to make his fortune in America and return as a self-made man. The gin-guzzling Mrs Gamp schemes her way to becoming Wegg's live-in nurse. Jaggers tells Edward his stock was seized and taken from the ship before it set sail: Barbary is ruined.
