Trivia

John Oliver puts on a playfully grandiose display of Canadian items with Canadian Mike Myers in a Mountie Red Serge uniform while displaying $5000 in cash while he and Myers urge Canadian viewers not to vote for Steve Harper for the Canadian federal election happening the next day. That money was for the anticipated fine for the crime of being a foreigner inducing Canadians to change their intended vote. However, the government department in charge of federal elections, Elections Canada, explained the next day that the law in question defines "inducement" as directly offering something material to Canadian voters to change their vote, like money. By contrast, Elections Canada explained that since Oliver did not offer anything material to voters and the money was in anticipation of paying a fine, all he did on the show was simply express an opinion about the election, which is perfectly legal.
