The Brokenwood Mysteries is becoming one of my favorite mysteries. The rapport between Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd (Neil Rea) and Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) is progressing nicely.
Detective Sims gets significant amount of time in this episode, and actually solves part of the complicated case--or rather a 5 year cold case connected to the present case. It is rare in police detective shows, for the assistant detective to be shown solving part of a case. This is a nice development, that I hope continues, since, I think, it makes the secondary character much more interesting to watch.
As with most police detective shows, the medical examiner or pathologist is a "major" minor character in every episode,
Here, the medical examiner is a native Russian, Dr. Gina Kadinsky (Cristina Ionda).
Dr. Kadinsky manages to be both imposing and odd. Imposing in that no one but Mike Shepherd ever wants to deal with her. And odd, in that the subtleties of the English language apparently baffle Dr. Kadinsky, and therefore her conversations with Mike Shepherd often leave him baffled!
The humor is almost always organic to the characters, and helps to make the sometimes grisly details--such as a severed hand in this episode--feel not quite so disturbing.
