- Frank (Alec Baldwin) and Nancy (Salma Hayek) are a married couple living in a British-style big house. They proudly send their only daughter to college. College is just a 5-hour drive, or 50 minutes by plane. But it turns out that the wealth of the family is not unlimited. Frank and Nancy are innovators and put all their money into a medical device for heart operations (artificial heart valves), but the business didn't take off (due to some unfavorable media reports that called their devices controversial) and now they are on the verge of financial ruin. As soon as they return home after dropping their daughter to college, their car is repossessed. They tell their sob story to guy picking up their car, who agrees to give them a break by reporting back that the couple were not at home.
To pay for the education of their daughter Rachael (Michelle Veintimilla) and hide financial collapse from her close ones, Frank and Nancy secretly arrange a garage sale at night, pouring it all in with alcohol. Nancy is angry that they have many expensive items in the house (like a $2000 Breville Coffee Machine) that they do even use.
Bob (Joe Manganiello) & Betty Donnelly (Natalia Cigliuti) are their snobby neighbors. While Jason (Ben Platt) is a cripple who lives with his mom on the same street. Nigel (Aasif Mandvi) is their rich neighbor whom they charge money for watching his house, when he is away on business trips. Nigel calls Frank and says that he is going to be away for 4 months. Frank also takes expensive wine bottles from Nigel's collection and adds it to his garage sale. Nancy objects to this and says that they may as well be renting out Nigel's house on Craigslist. The garage sale attracts almost no buyers. Nancy drinks the wine from Nigel's house. While drunk, they post the ad on Craigslist to rent out Nigel's house.
The next morning, a guy named Carl comes by, responding to the ad. In an act of desperation, Frank rents out Nigel's house to Carl (Jim Gaffigan). Carl paid 25,000 USD as 6 months advance rent to Frank. Carl turns out to be a level 3 sex offender. So, afraid that Nigel will send them to prison, they ask Carl to move into their house, while Frank and Nancy move into Nigel's. Nancy and Frank hide all their underwear before Carl moves into their house.
That night they are abducted by masked goons, who think Frank and Nancy are the sex offenders. They are released after the misunderstanding is sorted. They cannot go back to Nigel's house due to the fear of being attacked. They don't want to go Nancy's sister Janice or any of their close friends, as that would reveal their true financial position to them, and they want to keep up pretenses. They walk over to Bob's house and tell him that they need a place to bunk as they house is being treated for termites. They have to share beds with Bob's twins Tristan (Eddie Schweighardt) and Trey (Jeremy Shinder). The duo decides to post Nigel's house for rent again, since it is empty now.
The next morning Tristan pretends to be in bed with Frank and Nancy (while wearing Nancy's Spanx), while they are sleeping, and calls his dad Bob. Tristan claims that Frank made him wear the Spanx. Bob believes that Frank and Nancy were sexually assaulting Tristan and kicks them out of the house.
The house is rented by a weird dude named Wayne (Brian Donahue), and the duo end up spending the night at a parking lot. The next morning an ex-colleague Tyler (Kelly AuCoin) finds Frank at the parking and offers him an interview with Randall (Dan Soder). Nancy goes back to Nigel's house to find it has been robbed by their tenant. She goes to her own place, where Carl maces her (she tried to enter through the dog door at the back, as none of her keys worked) and then ends up getting locked with her inside his panic room (which was Nancy's closet earlier, which Carl converted without taking any permissions). She escapes through the top hatch in the ceiling after Carl tells her that he is not a sex offender and the whole thing was just a misunderstanding. He says that he was swimming in the ocean when he removed his trunks to pee. But then a shark brushed past him, and he panicked and swam to the shore, where he ended up exposing himself to some kids.
Randall tells Frank that the job is to steal catalytic converters from cars. Talking to Randall, Frank spots Wayne on the street and runs to catch up. While running, he notices people watching his and Nancy's kidnapping video on YouTube. He steals Wayne's truck. In the truck Frank and Nancy reach Jason to get him to delete all the YouTube videos of their kidnapping from the internet (as he is a computer genius). Jason tells them about an idea to host yard sales on the internet, Nancy calls its Yard Bay.
They stop at a gas station, where Nancy goes inside to buy a tampon, while Frank gets into an argument with a driver outside. Suddenly the police turn up and arrests everyone and finds 120 Kgs of cocaine in the driver's trunk. The driver was Shope (Sasha Mitchell) an international drug smuggler. Frank and Nancy are suspected to be their accomplices. But Frank's 300 USD MasterCard due convinces them that they are not hardened criminals. In the lock-up Shone tells Nancy about his 8-year-old daughter and how she is never going to see him again.
Frank and Nancy head to Frank's club and pitch the Yard Bay idea to Frank's snooty rich friends, who agree to invest. Meanwhile Rachael has come back to organize Nancy's surprise birthday party and is astonished to find Carl in her house. Rachael is amazed to find the lengths her parents went to put her through college. Frank and Nancy put all of Nigel's furniture back into his house. 2 months later, Nancy talks to Shone and arranges for his daughter Rose (JoJo Kushner) to stay with her and Frank.
