Shooting People Under the Stairs
House of Horrors with Director of Photography Sandi Sissel (2015)
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Cinematographer Sandi Sissel is interviewed about the making of Wes Craven's THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS. Sissel starts off talking about how she wasn't overly familiar with Craven's work so she had to catch up after she got the role. From here she talks about the various styles that Craven wanted including the darkness and how he constantly wanted the camera moving. She also goes into detail about the technology at time, which allowed them to use smaller lights to make sure the screen was dark but just light enough to see what they wanted you to. Fans of the film will certainly enjoy this more technical look at the making of the film but I think anyone wanting to become a cinematographer will also want to watch this as there's some great information given about the style of the picture and what they had to do to try and capture it. There's several good, more technical stories told here making it certainly worth sitting through.
