- Reid must return to Whitechapel to covertly re-investigate a case apparently solved by Drake and Jackson, while Susan receives devastating news.
- It's now 1897 and everyone is preparing to celebrate Queen Victoria's diamond Jubilee. Edmund Reid has left the police and now lives by the seaside with his daughter Mathilda - who is proving to be somewhat older than her years. He is soon approached by Deborah Goren who wants him to return to London and prove that Isaac Bloom is innocent of the crimes for which he has been convicted. In London, Det. Insp. Bennet Drake is in charge of the new and very modern Station H where Captain Jackson remains as the police surgeon. They are investigating the death of an Indian Muslim, Mr. Al Qadir, a respected solicitor who is found in the river with his throat slit. Jackson meanwhile is a reformed man, using every penny he can earn to get Long Susan freed from prison and from a trip to the gallows.—garykmcd
- In June 1897, the year of queen Victoria's diamond jubilee, Drake, now an inspector and married to Rose, has moved into a new police station with modern technology. Rose has also agreed to bring up Connor, the three year old son, by Jackson, of Susan, now in jail and awaiting the noose for her part in the mass murders instigated by her father. Drake investigates the killing of a young Indian, washed up in the docks and a member of the Muslim Patriotic League, a group designed to further the rights of British Muslims, though the death proves to have an emotional, rather than political, motive. Reid, living by the seaside, is persuaded to return to Whitechapel by Deborah Goren to help convicted murderer Isaac Bloom, whom she believes to be innocent - which will lead to his reinstatement at the station. Jackson does a deal with prison doctor Probyn to fake Susan's death, hiding her out with wharf owner Abel Croker.—don @ minifie-1
