Kooperman (2015): Dir: Harmony Wagner / Cast: Dylan Miller, Tamara Steele, Julien Kitson, Carl Peterson, Jeremy Larter: Innovative yet low budget comedy about an overweight underdog whose life was traumatized as a boy when he is the victim of bullying. He counters this through a female teacher who comes to his aid and becomes a fictional superhero in his mind. He now lives in an apartment selling comic books yet he is under threat of being evicted by the very guy who bullied him as a kid. This bully is into the worst karate possible, including a scene where he is overseen attempting oral sex on himself. He challenges Kooperman to frisbee in which he cheats and further humiliation him. Director Harmony Wagner employs some gross humour including an animation where a pair of testicles are dropped in a blender. Another scene involves an outhouse and sh*t filled underwear that pushes the limits. Wagner does deliver on a decent screenplay with a surprise conclusion that pushes the film above the lousy special effects. Dylan Miller as Kooperman is scene stealing amusing with his lazy slacker disposition that often climaxes with sickening things happening to him. It hits home on a theme of bullying and viewers can get behind the hero but his constant bad luck can get overbearing. Supporting characters are detailed. Kooperman's best friend does a standup act that jabs at Kooperman. There is an elderly woman whom Kooperman services through odd jobs and further humiliation. It is low budget to the core but its theme of bullying allows the ordinary target into greatness. Score: 8 / 10
