Great start

After watching the first Ep, I thought it was pretty good and am keen to find out how it plays out. If I went off what the other idiots on here wrote I would never have given this a chance. Well acted, even though another reviewer said Tim Roth can't act. What the hell are they thinking.

Shallow nonsense

I've given it 7 because of the scenery, otherwise it's a 6.

The first series started of like it was going to rival some of the other thriller TV series like Ozark, but quickly proved not. A different concept: yes. Set in Canada - for a pleasant change - amidst fabulous scenery, the implausible, alchoholic, head-banging ex British cop is ridiculous.

I managed to stay with it till the end, and when the 2nd series came out I thought " this has got to be better", but it wasn't. However, I must have had nothing else to watch at the time, therefore I watched the whole over-the-top craziness again.

Now, the 3rd series is being shown on Now TV (from Sky), and I have struggled through the first 3 episodes before giving up entirely. The production values are high, but the storyline could have been written by the Brothers Grimm, it's that unbelievable. The whole thing has grown exponentially madder and preposterous.

The sooner Line of Duty, Better call Saul and Ozark come back the better.

An uneven production

This series was uneven. I had a bit of a love hate relationship with it. I was annoyed with how it was written to be Canada but the writers obviously knew nothing about Canada, Canadians or our societal norms, which in turn put the premise, the relationships, the pivotable conflict with "big oil" and pretty much everything at risk. So my first struggle was to suspend disbelief and pretend it to be some foreign country that has all the physical majesty of Canada but is only coincidentally called Canada. The acting is tremendous. The pace is patchy and it's telling of episodes back to front drags things out and we can see the "twists" coming a mile away. The last episode of season 1 is absolutely redemptive. So, there you go, overall the episodes are 7 (good) and 6 (fair) but the last episode of season 1 is a 9 (superb), so I will settle my rating for the whole season being an 7.3 (great moments) out of 10. It has earned the second season a trial, at least. [Cop/Crime Drama]

That old chestnut revenge

As is my header " That Old chestnut Revenge" that's what this is about..that old chestnut revenge.

In these days of reality it's nice to see what you might call 50's plots on our screen again.

Yes,,,you can critic plot holes and a few not so good performances...but as revenge thrillers go it's up there with the best of them.

Suspend belief and enjoy the beautiful camera work and the excellent scenery....also enjoy the savage and cartoon like violence.

Tim Roth has a great time being a wide boy in the wilderness and everybody goes with the flow...

Keep your tongue planted firmly in your cheek and just enjoy...after the 1st episode you will know whether you want to ride along or switch off...so why not switch off if you want to and stop negative reviews.

Great bubblegum entertainment that is ready for a series 2 script.

Like Marmite..you will love or hate it...i loved it!!

Ridiculous last season

Stick to 1 & 2. Time Roth is excellent and the plot is interesting. Season 3 is garbage.

Season 3 is sadly so awful

The first 2 seasons of Tin Star were so good. Great story , directing and acting . I loved it. Sadly however this last 3 season set in Liverpool is simply awful . I can't believe how much it's gone downhill. I will watch till the end out of allegiance to the original classiness of the show but what a shame.

3rd series disappointing

Clearly, someone decided to call time but gave enough to only make 6 eps. Bit of a disappointment after Series 1 and 2. Not sure who Joanne Whalley was supposed to be tbh.........

Good 1st season pointless 2nd

The 2nd season has nothing to do with the 1st, seemed like the makers were stretching this out way to way much. Season one was perfect but it didn't need a 2nd season!

Thoroughly "Enigmatic" British ex-cop in Canada, but not a bad Action Drama

The series hinges on the flip-flop personality of lead-ex-cop, Jim, played by Tim Roth. Unbelievable is the absence of liver disease in such a hardened alcoholic - or brain-damage from so many knocks to the head. Then Tim's past Adultery - blown COMPLETELY out of proportion, and for what purpose, precisely? But I like Tin Star for its rawness, it's never-ending menace and adventure. The females, Anna and Angela Worth, again punch above their weight, like all good screen-girls. But still awaiting S03 as something good to watch..

Uneven plot and pacing compensated for by some great performances

As a big fan of Banshee, I am surprised there hasn't been more observations about the many parallels drawn by Tin Star ... Renegade bloke pitches up in a one horse town as new Sheriff, although it turns out he isn't all that he appears. Non-conformist relationship with his team who somehow still follow his orders. Events of the past follow him. Ultra-baddies in town also require handling. Sheriff's wife is a bit of a bad ass in her own right. Sheriff has dysfunctional relationship with his teen aged daughter. There is a reservation (reserve) near the town, with a casino owned by the grumpy, indigenous population. Lots of gratuitous violence. Not as much sex, but some. Lots of scenes in bars and police HQ. I enjoyed Banshee more but I still enjoyed Tin Star.

Tim Roth is superb and the behaviour of his character becomes more understandable as the plot develops. The supporting cast is uniformly excellent although Christina Hendricks is sadly underused (Why? did she have limited availability?)

If you like the violent thriller genre Tin Star ticks most of the boxes. If you don't like the genre, go and review something else. Saying "I didn't like this thriller because I prefer Rom Com's" is of limited value.

One of my all time favorite TV series.

October 16, 2022 - All of the films and TV series I've seen Tim Roth in, have made him one of my favorite actors. Tin Star is a rather odd series, that I think some would consider a "dramedy", but with some very serious violence. I watched the first two seasons in rapid succession, but finding a service that offered the third and final season in the U. S. was very difficult, or I didn't want to subscribe to that service. Fortunately, I was able to see the third season and enjoyed it more than the first two seasons. The first two seasons where the sheriff and his family always seem to be working against each other. Was okay, but in the third season of the series, they pretty much came together as a family. Overall, I liked the whole series so much that I was considering buying Blu-rays discs of all three seasons. However, the way the series ends didn't really appeal to me, though I thought it was okay. One of the things that I really enjoyed was the way young women were portrayed especially in the second and third seasons. There are some very important and plucky girls that impact directly on the plot. There is one scene in the third season where Mr. Roth's character interacts with a young female drug mule. That makes me smile every time I think about the dialog between them. One "featured reviewer" seems to totally dislike the third season, while I like the third season the best of all three. Lastly, I think the acting, writing, directing and production values in all three seasons are extremely good. This is definitely one of my all time favorite TV series.

Promising start descends into chaos

The 1st season is dark with an engaging anti-hero (at least to begin with). I thought it was well worth watching despite some large plot-holes (such as Jack surely knowing what Frank looks like and the women's bizarrely guilty reaction to the self-defence killing).

The subsequent seasons descend into incoherent mayhem. A wannabe Witness 2nd season and Thelma & Louise(?) on steroids 3rd season just don't work. The creators seem to gleefully press all the wrong buttons but that does not magically create a good program. With all the innocent casualties I was wishing for our anti-heroes to get their comeuppance - not sure that was the reaction the creators were aiming for?

The actors and acting are all pretty good, as are the production values. It is simply the plot that has lost the plot as it were. Almost a case study in the importance of plot.

If you can stop at season 1 that would be a good move.

Also, they seem to have cut a friend of mine out of the Everton supporters extras scene. Unforgivable!

A slow build that really packs a punch towards the end! Things are not what they may seem to be! Good watch!

Love-Hate Relationship

Let's start with the positive: I started watching this because of Tim Roth. It's always a joy to see him on screen. The acting of the other cast members is also quite good.

Overall, the show sucked me in and the first season ended with a great cliffhanger.

The locations and also the visual design of the entire show was very moody and pleased my eyes.

It's a big shame that the writing seems a bit inconsistent, like someone else stated. The show was quite over the top at parts.

Season two was quite weird to say the least. Season three confuses me even more.

There's great ideas there but they weren't developed ideally.

I would say it's an enjoyable and somewhat thrilling watch that annoys sometimes. Silly meets brutal.

I don't regret my time spent on this show but it deserved better with such potential.

Compelling Show About Awful People

The main characters (sheriff, his wife, most of the oil company folks, etc) are nasty, broken people. Tim Roth's lead is a manipulative, narcissistic alcoholic. He destroys everything he touches. By the end of the first season, he reveals just what a vile human being he is. Yet the show is well acted and directed through the beginning of the second season. I'm interested to see if they can continue to keep it interesting.

Something Slightly Different

I really enjoyed the first season of Tin Star, albeit slightly hard to follow in places. Season two was also really good and explained a lot about Jack and his family however I was slightly disappointed with season 3 (titled as Tin Star: Liverpool). I had such high hopes but it didn't live up to what I expected and the ending was disappointing. If we were getting a 4th season that ending would've been fine but as it's the actual ending it's a bit stupid that we'll never know what happened. Overall in intriguing show with many unexpected twists and some good action scenes.

A wild ride of violence in a beautiful scenery amid inconsistencies

Tin Star is a show that dares to be different-sometimes to its own detriment. Fronted by Tim Roth as the chaotic and tormented ex-cop Jack Worth, the series starts off with promise in Season 1, offering stunning Canadian backdrops, high production value, and a premise that hints at greatness. Roth's performance is magnetic, and the show establishes a gritty, violent tone reminiscent of Banshee and Ozark.

However, what begins as a compelling revenge thriller quickly spirals into a series of increasingly implausible twists and head-scratching detours. While there is some charm in its over-the-top chaos and dark humour, it brings along inconsistent pacing, heavy reliance on time jumps, and writing that often strains credibility. The show's depiction of Canada-while visually breath-taking-feels like it was imagined by someone who's never been there.

Season 2 takes a hard left turn into bizarre area; Season 3, set in Liverpool, does not really fit in the whole context, although it brought the fractured family back together and give the series a stylish (yet odd) conclusion. On the other hand, it marked some decline in storytelling quality, making it feel like a completely different show.

Despite its flaws, Tin Star has its moments of brilliance-mainly thanks to the committed performances and striking cinematography. It's a show that's both compelling and frustrating, messy yet memorable. The Series leaves an impression, just don't expect logic to be part of the deal.

Decent Thriller, terrible lead character

I have ended up enjoying the first series of Tin Star, there has been some good twists and turns, I liked the location and the acting has been good. What has been bothering me however is how unlikeable Tim Roth's lead character is. Despite an unimaginable loss in the first episode, the response he shows throughout just makes me dislike him more by each episode. I struggle to see why anyone in his life would want to have any sort of relationship with him or what he offers as a partner, family member, work colleague or friend. It's definitely worth a watch and I would recommend it other than that.

Mersey Killing

What a strange show "Tin Star" was. Like "Fortitude" before it, the British production filmed in Canada (mostly) but with a cast largely plucked from the British television scene, though with the odd high-profile American actor thrown in. I really enjoyed the first and third seasons of the show, but the second left me cold.

Jack Worth (Tim Roth) is an English Police Office, sent to be the Chief of Police in a small Canadian mining town. Tragedy befalls the family before he can even start work as his past catches up with him in the worst way possible. Away from his personal demons, the town is beset by corruption and violence and the oil company dominates all the various facets. The second season sees the family integrate with a religious community, but they too have links to organised crime that requires Jack to eliminate. The third season sees the family returning to Liverpool to face down their past.

My gravest wish, looking back on "Tin Star" now, is that I had watched it without the years between the seasons. The very dramatic opening scene, which was showed as a preview in Cinema's I remember, sets the tone for the show going forward. It's essentially a dark revenge fantasy thriller, often more like a black comedy, with Jack Worth using alcohol to bring back a long-extinguished alter ego, whose propensity for violence, disorder and chaos becomes what is required to get his family through these darker times. The performances from all the players are really wonderful, with particular praise for the central three, of Roth, his wife Angela, played by Genevieve O'Reilly and his daughter Anna, played by Abigail Lawrie.

As I said about, I really liked the first and third seasons, the second is a strange detour that, if I'm honest, you can probably do without, save for the opening scenes dealing with the immediate fallout of the first. I liked the Liverpool season though, which works to resolve the main story.

I do think that it better serves sensibilities on this side of the Atlantic and at just 25 episodes, with a confirmed and definitive ending, it's not that much of a time commitment.
