- It's the middle of winter. While Karen and her current husband Ted go off on a cruise vacation, they decide to leave her two sons, teenage Bradley and preteen Caleb, with her ex-husband, the kids' father, immature Elliot, who they don't see often. That immaturity led to Elliot sustaining a workplace injury and being let go from his latest job, and he thus being behind in his bills. Elliot's initial anger in the boys finding and playing with his rifle, something they have no experience in handling, changes when he decides to turn it into a teaching lesson in responsible gun safety in taking the boys hunting in an old logging area north of the city. Early into their arrival in the logging area, they run into vehicle problems. Far off the highway, Elliot believes their best course of action is to walk to a cabin in the woods, its location of which he only has a vague idea. In the snow covered landscape, they are able to make their way there. At the cabin, Elliot increasingly becomes unhinged in a combination of his immaturity, he suffering from proverbial and literal cabin fever, and most specifically his reaction to news from the boys as to their immediate future, his actions all in what he tells himself being to keep the boys safe.—Huggo
