Ducky talks about the pride he feels looking at a painting of the USS Chesapeake, "built to protect a new nation". However, the Chesapeake was the runt of the litter, smaller and slower than its sister ships. It was a privateer (pirate) ship. And its thrashing and subsequent boarding by the British for harbouring deserters was one of the events that sparked the 1812 war.
The Chesapeake was taken by the British only a fortnight after it joined the 1812 war, in a battle that lasted less than 15 minutes. After recommissioning as the HMS Chesapeake for the reminder of the war, the ship was broken up by a private buyer and the pieces are now a mill.
That isn't a history that inspires pride.
