A romantic comedy that follows Maddy and Payal's live-in relationship until a sudden turn of events creates a distance between them.

Katti Batti is an anti-love story starring Imran Khan as Madhav Kabra (Maddy) & Kangana Ranaut as Payal. Maddy is an architect who is in love with Payal because of her attitude towards life. The story revolves around Maddy & Payal's live-in relationship for 5 years until a sudden turn of events when Payal leaves Maddy mid-way!—Roshan Kumar

Madhav "Maddy" Kabra (Imran Khan) is an architect who is in love with Payal (Kangana Ranaut) because of her attitude towards life. They are in a live-in relationship for 5 years. Payal is spontaneous and impulsive, while Maddy is conservative, organized and rational. Maddy and Payal have regular sex.

A sudden turn of events makes Payal leave Maddy. Within 6 weeks of Payal leaving, Maddy tries to commit suicide by consuming bottles of Phenyl (although he claims that he made a mistake and drank the bottles thinking they were beer bottles) and is rushed to the hospital by his friends Vinay (Abhishek Saha) and Yash (Gavin Methalaka). Maddy's sister is Koyal (Mithila Palkar), and his parents are Mr Kabra (Suneel Sinha) and his wife (Suparna Marwah) who passed away recently. Koyal asks Maddy to pack his stuff and decides to take him home for his safety.

It is not exactly clear why Payal left Maddy, but it's been 2 years now, but Maddy is still unable to fully let go of Payal's memory. Everyone associated to Maddy is concerned about his mental health and wants him to let go. Koyal tells Maddy that Payal has never committed to anything in her life. Her own father roams the world as a doctor, while her mother runs a set of 100-200 NGOs after being divorced. Maddy counters that Payal let go of her chance to move to Paris for him. Koyal says that Payal treated Maddy like her "discover India" project, and she was never clear in life as sometimes she wanted to be an artist and at other times to be a model. Gradually, Maddy returns to work. Devika is his colleague and has a crush on Maddy. Maddy tells her that he is gay.

Before dating Maddy, Payal used to date Rakesh Ahuja / Ricky (Vivan Bhatena). Ricky followed Payal to Ahmedabad (where Maddy & Payal went to college) & even fought Maddy for her. Now, after 2 years of breakup, Ricky re-surfaces as a client for Maddy's architecture firm and takes every opportunity to insult Maddy. He makes Maddy repeat his entire presentation out of spite. Ricky confronts Maddy and says that now Maddy will go through everything that he went through when Payal broke up with him. Maddy tells his boss that there is no chance that their agency would get the business from Ahuja.

In flashback, Maddy was madly in love with Payal, whom he met when they were studying at the same college. Maddy was studying architecture while Payal was studying arts. Payal herself was a free spirit and had never been tied down to one thing or idea. This was a relationship doomed for failure.

Maddy and Payal broke up several times during their courtship. Maddy would get horribly drunk and one occasion his parents came by to visit, while he was drunk and depressed. Payal and Maddy's friends came together to pretend that Maddy was rehearsing for a college play that required him to play the role of a drunk person. Maddy's mom realizes that Maddy and Payal are deeply in love.

Payal & Maddy lived in Mumbai after college and shared an apartment which they rented for Rs 30,000 per month (and a security deposit of Rs 1,00,000). They tell the landlady that they are married, and want to have kids, which is why they are renting a large apartment. Maddy's mom died during their relationship. Maddy's mother was suffering for a long time from an illness. Maddy was very close to his mom and felt alone. He & his entire family looked to Payal to support Maddy during this time. Maddy's family accepted Payal as one of their own.

Maddy contacts Payal's friend Swetha to get her new contact number. Maddy tells Swetha that he is unable to move on, like Payal has done. Swetha had an infant kid of her own. As Swetha refuses to give Payal's number to Maddy, he intentionally makes the baby cry. As Swetha gets busy with her child, Maddy takes Swetha's phone and gets Payal's new mobile number from it. Maddy gets in touch with Payal over phone after their breakup. Payal is in Delhi now. Payal acts very aloof & seems to have moved on from her relationship with Maddy. This hurts Maddy more than anything. Payal says that she is starting a NGO and it seems like she is shopping for her upcoming wedding.

Then Maddy dates his colleague Devika, on the advice of his best friend. The best friend sends the photos of Maddy with Devika to Ricky. Ricky wastes no time in showing those photos to Payal. The next thing Maddy finds is that Payal is getting married to Ricky. Maddy's finds that their agency had won the deal from Ahuja and believes that Ahuja gave the deal in exchange of the photos and his wedding to Payal.

Maddy meets their common friends who tell Maddy that Payal was getting increasingly disturbed at the regular fights between her & Maddy. But Maddy is shocked to learn that the version of the fights told by Payal was completely devoid of any truth.

Maddy finds the location of Payal's wedding & turns up to disrupt it. He even picks a huge fight with Ricky but is stopped when Payal slaps him hard. Maddy leaves but is not convinced. But that's when he is told by his own sister that Payal was diagnosed with a life ending condition, the same day his mom died. So, Payal could never tell Maddy as she could not see Maddy undergoing the same pain twice. Hence, she convinced everyone to play along with her and try and convince Maddy to move on from her. Even Ricky was part of the plan, who agreed to put his marriage on hold, to participate in this charade.

When Maddy finds, he traces Payal again & says that he wants to spend the remaining time with her. He gets married to Payal, stays with her through Chemotherapy and finally after a few months Payal dies in his arms
