Part 2 of the making of the so-bad-its-good flick
Part 2 continues with the focus on post production. The voice for Howard was provided by Chip Zein who was a Broadway actor and they spent hours in the recording booth. Then we move onto Ben Burtt doing the sound and John Barry doing the score.
With the film nearly completed, they took it to test screening.
The filmmakers knew that they were in trouble.
The film got released and began to suffer from bad reviews. This depressed the cast and crew. They had high hopes when making it, only for that dream to crumble right in front of them.
Ed Gale said he got a big screen TV and invited all his friends to watch the critics talk about the film. Only for them to bash it. Ed was heartbroken. So were Will, Gloria and Lea.
Jeffrey Jones said "There is no point worrying about what you've done. What you've done is done. I'm proud of it and I'm happy with my part in it. Onto the next."
George Lucas said to Will and Gloria "Don't worry. Maybe in 20 years time, people will discover this film."
The film's first A.D. introduced Ed to Mel Brooks. Mel asked "How did you two meet?" and the first A.D. said "Ed's Howard The Duck." Mel Brooks stood up and said to Ed Gale "Anyone who was in Howard The Duck can be in my movie." and Ed was cast in Spaceballs.
Then Will and Gloria started to notice that this film started to have a cult following. Much like Plan 9 From Outer Space, people liked the film because it was so bad it was funny.
Ed still gets fans coming up to him and talking about it.
The doc ends with the 5 interviewees saying how proud they are of this film despite it's reputation.
And Ed still has kept his Howard arms.
Overall, 2 interesting docs for a guilty pleasure movie. If you like the movie check 'em out.
