Philip divulges Martha knows Clark is not who he claimed to be but Philip trusts Martha not to talk. They talk to Gabriel about the Martha Operation and the FBI mail robot. Elizabeth and Philip visit the shop where the mail robot is taken for repair to obtain intel. When the elderly wife of the original owner comes in unexpectedly, Elizabeth chats with her and the old lady realizes Elizabeth is going to kill her. Visibly upset at having to kill her, Elizabeth makes her death painless with a drug overdose and she talks with her, reassuring her as she dies. Stan and Oleg continue on their own operation to save Nina. Philip has a very truthful Scrabble game with Gabriel.—LA-Lawyer
- Elizabeth meets Hans in a secluded place and tells him she's worried that Todd saw him during their kidnapping operation. She can't no longer work with him.
Philip tells Elizabeth at the travel agency that the FBI found the bug in Gaad's pen. He also tells her that Martha knows Philip isn't the FBI internal investigator that he claimed to be, because the one investigating the bugged pen isn't him. He says he's planning to see Martha that night, which makes Elizabeth nervous. But he says he's sure Martha hasn't told anyone about her suspicions because he trusts her. That night, Philip walks nervously into Martha's apartment but she seems to be in a normal, fine mood. She gets a call from the foster agency and says they're no longer interested in taking a child in. They sit down for dinner and Martha toasts, "To turning the page." She tells him that Gaad is losing it, and attacked the mail robot.
Oleg meets Stan in a warehouse to tell him he might be right about Zinaida. He says he has a way they can know for sure, but it's very risky if they get caught.
Hans sneaks up on Todd stocking bookshelves alone in a warehouse and shoots him in the eye. His gun jams and the first shot doesn't kill Todd, and a drawn out struggle ensues with Hans eventually choking Todd to death.
Gabriel tells Philip and Elizabeth that he's confident Martha will be able to keep the operation going, but The Center also wants to have the mail robot bugged. This worries Philip, who argues that there is no way they can expect Martha to keep changing the tapes with the new bug. Gabriel mentions it could be lowly mail clerks or janitorial staff instead, and reminds Philip to trust The Center.
Hans tells Elizabeth he killed Todd so he could keep working with her -- and no on saw him. He wants to work for the cause.
Philip and Elizabeth break into the repair shop where the mail robot is being held so they can plant the bug in it. Elizabeth tells Philip it's only natural that he would develop some feelings for Martha. Elizabeth, keeping watch, hears some papers shuffling. She finds an older lady who immediately tries to call for help, but Elizabeth tells her that would be a bad idea. The lady starts to chat Elizabeth up, telling her she is a bookkeeper who likes to work late because she feels more connected to her late husband that way. She tells her all her family, showing her family photographs. The woman asks Elizabeth for some water, and she goes to update Philip on the lady, telling her husband served four years in the war. He says she picked a bad time to be there.
Stan brings Zinaida to her hotel room and it's clear they're both getting tired of each other, even though they're being nice.
The lady uses the water to take her heart medication, cheerfully explaining the doctors tell her she needs a new heart but she doesn't see the point. She asks Elizabeth her name and about her family, and when Elizabeth tells her that her mother lives in Russia the woman realizes she's not getting out of the situation alive. She says she didn't expect things to end, but it's better than simply falling in the middle of the street or ending up in hospitals, which she hates. Elizabeth says nothing and pounds out the woman's heart medication -- several pills -- onto the desk. With a gesture, the woman knows she's expected to take them all.
In Zinaida's hotel room, she hears a noise and finds a man sitting in the shadows pointing a gun at her. We know it's Oleg in disguise, but he describes himself as "a patriot" and tells her he wants her to recant everything she's said about the Soviet Union and the war in Afghanistan and return home as a hero, someone "seduced by the west" who came to her senses. He wants her to do this in two weeks, or he'll come back and there won't be any talking next time. Stan comes in, according to his plan with Oleg, to deliver Zinaida's dinner. Oleg -- we have to assume this is part of the script to sell the whole thing -- surprises Stan with some kicks to the gut and a blow to the head that prompts some serious bleeding.
Philip is finishing up the bug planting and hears some more noises. Meanwhile, the old lady is carrying on her conversation with Elizabeth while continuing to down the pills. She struggles to talk as she explains that she and her husband Gil got married twice. They'd split up, he remarried, and then when his second wife died they remarried. The woman says Gil would never talk about Helen (his other wife - her best friend) and the war. The woman asks Elizabeth if Gil sent her and if he told her she's afraid of pain, and Elizabeth says yes to both questions. Elizabeth starts to develop tears in her eyes as she assures the woman that Gil is not with Helen in the afterlife. The woman asks Elizabeth if she has children and when she says she does, she asks, "And this is what you do?" Elizabeth tries to explain that she's doing this to "make the world a better place." The lady says that's what all evil people tell themselves to justify what they do. She gasps and dies. Elizabeth is still in tears when she says they have to leave.
Stan reports to Gaad, with Adderholt in the room, about being surprised by the guy who was in Zenaida's room. Later, Oleg meets with Stan and tells him Zinaida didn't break or confess or panic. Stan thinks she might have been in shock. Oleg apologizes to Stan for hitting him so hard in the head, but has a slight smirk as he does it.
Philip and Gabriel play Scrabble -- as is their custom, with Gabriel busting out a big word, as usual -- when Gabriel asks Philip about what the problem is in their marriage. Gabriel informs him that Elizabeth actually rejected the first officer proposed to her as her first husband, and that in her own way, she really chose him. Philip tells Gabriel that he, Gabriel, is the problem. Philip says he trusted Gabriel and he was supposed to protect him. But now, Philip says, his job is to protect his family -- because no one else is going to.
