I stumbled upon this movie on Amazon Prime. It looked like a cheap horror movie that may be a hidden gem or a "so bad, it's good" movie. Unfortunately, it is neither.
First, the lead actor (who is also the writer/producer) is terrible. It would be almost forgivable, because he is spouting really bland, unnatural dialogue (as is everyone else), but because he is the one who wrote it, it is just sad. There are a few moments where the acting is so bad that I got a chuckle, but it is mostly non-eventful.
Second, the script is cliche and poorly paced. For a horror/suspense movie, it is usually not a good idea to completely give away the entire movie in the first two scenes. *Spoilers* The opening scene shows a murder/suicide where 3 people are involved (2 women and 1 male). Then, the very next scene, the two main characters are shown driving down a tunnel into a white light (get it, they are dead!) This was very obvious that they had died and were going into the afterlife (it is a very slow shot, where the actors have confused looks on their faces), yet the movie tries to give "clues" as if this wasn't completely obvious. At one point, someone asks why more people don't know about the town, and the bellhop says "Some people don't believe it exists," like Heaven/afterlife, get it! The rest of the movie is completely deflated by this obvious "twist," because the entire movie is watching the main character wonder around aimlessly, confused as to what is going on (yet you the viewer knows exactly), and you never feel invested in the mystery. There is a slight twist, as you figure out exactly how the lead actor dies prior to events of the movie, but it is meaningless, because you knew he was dead the whole time and the way he died has no underlying substance.
Lastly, the movie is saved from a 1/10 by the director (who is not the lead actor/writer). This guy did his best to polish a turd, and deserves some credit. The film is well shot, has some interesting lighting effects, and has overall very competent camera work.
I would stay away from this one at all costs, unless you have a morbid curiosity with terrible movies.
