6/10
I gave 6/10 because of the ignorance and lack of effort in distinguishing between Taiwanese and Chinese identity. I think the show is great, since its finally representing 'Asian' culture in a way that immigrants can relate to. However, I'm not surprised of the stereotype of American's lack of knowledge in other countries outside of US. There's not even a careful consideration when the producers decide to touch on the sensitivity and controversial issue of Taiwan and China. Since the show is supposedly "based on an inspirational true story" of Eddie Huang's life- and his family has identified themselves as "Taiwanese" - shouldn't the producers give a thorough research first before actually presenting a national Chinese flag in this episode? Did Eddie Huang says he is from Mainland China? An ROC flag would be more realistic. And realistically speaking, its absolutely rare for a Taiwanese to hold up a Chinese flag. Seriously, if you guys don't know and don't care about Taiwan's political stance in this touchy issue (which is reaching its peak of tension between these two region), might as well change their identity to Chinese nationality and delete the term 'Taiwanese' in other forums/sites (though it will just deviate from the true story of Eddie Huang even more, which the show was was based on). Producers should learn to have a sense of respect and implement some cross-cultural knowledge and awareness before producing a show that is based on cultural neglect instead of cultural intelligence and maturity.
