Promotes illegal activity by minors. Does nothing to prevent violence.
The description of this as a "Public Service Video on reducing gun violence in schools and communities" is misleading. It does nothing to promote the prevention of violence and instead promotes illegal and extremely dangerous activities. The illegal activities include felonies under many state and federal laws.
Children and irresponsible adults should not be allowed to view this video since it promotes activities that might very well cause harm or death to the child stealing the weapon or to others around him. To wit:
1) Illegal - Theft of firearms (state)
2) Illegal - Possession of a stolen firearm (state)
3) Illegal - Possession of a handgun by a minor (state & federal)
4) Illegal - Carrying without a license (several states)
5) Illegal - Bringing a firearm into a Gun-Free Zone (state, federal, and school policy)
6) Unsafe - Finger on the trigger
7) Unsafe - Firearm loose in a backpack with no holster/trigger guard
8) Unsafe - No muzzle awareness: Firearm sweeps countless people while stored in an unsafe manner in a backpack.
Although it is not "promoted", the parent in this video had her weapon stored improperly. The young man states "I don't feel safe with a gun in my home" .... I'm not sure I would feel safe either if my parents did not understand basic gun safety. If not being carried, firearms should be stored in such a way that it is not accessible to unauthorized users, particularly children. The parents of this child acted irresponsibly and put themselves and their son in danger by keeping a weapon in a dresser drawer.
As an alternative, I would suggest the gun safety videos and information available at www.nssf.org/safety/. In particular, the Project ChildSafe materials including free kits that include a gun lock available from many local law enforcement agencies.
Teaching a child how to behave when in the presence of a gun will serve him much better, even if you have made the choice not to own firearms. I don't think the young man in this PSA has much understanding of gun safety (although he did have proper trigger placement when placing the gun into his backpack).
This "PSA" is incredibly dangerous and the producers are irresponsible and putting many lives at risk.
(Please note: I am not associated with or a member of the National Sports Shooting Federation, or the NRA for that matter. Also, I am not a lawyer but try to stay current on federal and my state's laws regarding firearms. As a responsible, law-abiding citizen, you should be familiar with the law as well.)
