Bobby Burns Is Bedeviled As Walter Stull Jabs Him
boblipton25 October 2020
Here's one of the forgotten comedy duos of the 1910s, Pokes & Jabs. Burns goes to pick up some deviled crabs for supper, and the street starts turning, until Stull, as the devil, gets Burns' soul in return for a good time.

Not that he gets one. Mostly it's the sort of camera tricks that Melies had vented in the 1890s, although there's something more to it than Melies had done. It's not simply the camera tricks, meant to astonish the movie audience, but a technique to achieve a particular effect in service of the tale being told. It's grammar, not the point of the movie.

Fun little early silent short
Gabbo2 November 2020
I saw this film around Halloween 2020 on Ben Model's Silent Comedy Watch Party episode 31. It has some very clever Melies style gags which are well worth seeing and which prefigure the classic silent film Faust (1922)
