Nothing new, but still enjoyable
jcslawyer10 May 2020
Look, I get that the transformation body horror genre can get tired, but if done properly it can still be good with gross out moments. This is no exception. Certainly not the most amazing movie, and it certainly paid more than its share of homage to The Fly (1986).

Good story, decent acting, just enough length to get in then get out to the next film. In the meantime, it still offers the pukey moments and makes you want to shower.

Decent but relies too much on its goo
filmbizarro6 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Chad Archibald has a number of notable titles under his belt as a producer with titles such as "Sweet Karma", "In the House of Flies", "Antisocial" and "Septic Man" to just name a few. While his filmography as a director is significantly smaller, there's enough there for some of our readers to have seen his work even though I have not. Going by his producer credits, I was excited to dig into his new body horror movie "Bite".

Casey comes home from a bachelorette trip only a few days prior to the wedding. Some things that happened on the trip are still lingering on her mind, making her anxious and giving her cold feet before the wedding. But worst of all is a seemingly harmless bite that she got while in the water. The bug bite starts to grow. Soon she has a big boil of pus on her leg, and things about to get even worse. She hears things as if they are just beside her. She's spewing out translucent eggs. Yes, it escalates from here.

You've likely heard about "Bite" from the articles about the people who puked and fainted. I have no plans to make my review a comment on someone's article - but while "Bite" definitely has gross things going on, it's unlikely to affect anyone but those with pretty weak stomachs. What we see in "Bite" is nothing new, especially now as we have gotten a few too many body horrors involving women who start to transform. But most of all, "Bite" is a movie about a woman turning into something insect-like, and it is still miles away from the grossness portrayed in Cronenberg's "The Fly".

If we leave the comparisons for a second and just look at what this movie has to offer, there are certainly some gross scenes involving puke, pus and slimy eggs coming out of orifices. Unfortunately the transformation that Casey is about to experience never really goes beyond some layers or slime and bruises - at the very most looking like a burn victim. The apartment which essentially turns into her hive is an interesting addition that the other body horrors didn't really have, mostly because Casey does indeed turn into an insect being. However, the "hive" looks more like a haunted house attraction. In fact there are just a few scenes in the movie where the effects are really effective.

Normally decent effects that would be just fine, but the recent trend of body horrors has seemed more like show reels of effects, or competitions between each other. "Bite" doesn't have much more to offer than its goo and pus, which certainly puts it far below a classic like the "The Fly". More recently I'd put it up against "Thanatomorphose", which didn't have too much going on outside of its effects either - but that one actually felt disgusting.

Okay, let's put the effects to the side for a moment. The reason I am so harsh against this movie is that it simply doesn't stand out. From the beginning I had a hard time feeling sympathy for any of the characters, let alone Casey. There were no reasons for us to really care for the majority of the movie, and when reasons were given it sort of felt like it was too late. Her fiancé was okay but due to his annoying mother and the relationship they had he got dragged down with it. So right there we have two characters with a tragedy between them (her transformation), and yet I feel incredibly untouched by it. I don't really have any grudge again the actors, there were certainly fine, but the direction they were given was often very underwhelming. Scenes like them stumbling into Casey's hive of an apartment show some severe underreacting to what is going on. It's a horror movie, I get it - they need to walk into her apartment and have some stuff happen to them, but their reactions threw me out of the movie entirely. Going by the fact that it happened to most characters and not just one, I will say it's the fault of the direction and not the actors.

There are some smaller things that I could dive into, but I don't want anyone to confuse my criticism with hate. Fact is, "Bite" is a pretty innocent horror movie. It seems to have the attitude that it wants to gross you out, but beyond that it doesn't step outside of many boundaries. It's a decent enough horror movie for the general fan to check out, especially if you haven't watched that many body horror movies. As a fan of the subgenre I will continue to watch what will come my way, but perhaps it is time to retire the transforming women for a while? The best body horror movies are rather complex and show a wide variety of talents. David Cronenberg built much of his fan base on the fact that he could deliver something incredibly gross, but at the same time very thought-provoking. We live in a time where everything has to be fast and over-the-top to satisfy this ADD generation, so it makes sense that the majority of new body horror movies focus solely on the disturbing effects. Personally I hope we can go back to when body and mind were equally important in the matter.

Love of detail, no matter the budget
HK_Key-Si_HK17 March 2018
The beginning of the movie left me already winding myself in my seat and my first reaction was "oh no, not another one of these terrible low budget movies". But the further the movie progressed, the more I got sucked into it. This is one of the movies where you shouldn't care about the plot, the dialogues or even the characters themselves. Instead just focus on the practical effects they used and how they add more and more layers of film art step by step. This is one of the movies known for the audience leaving the cinema because they couldn't take it anymore at some point. And I can totally understand where this is coming from. If you have a problem with vomiting, slime and goo... or insects in particular, you might not enjoy this movie at all. Those who can sit through something like this will get rewarded with an awesome example of how to create a creepy creature and using just the right lighting to not ruin things. I applaude this movie! Thank you for the love of detail, no matter the budget. If you liked the visuals of The Fly, you will love Bite. If this movie would have the acting and the writing of The Fly, it could be maybe even become another classic of our time.

Standout performance
clareypotter14 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I love my friends, however, if I rocked up at one of their houses and it was covered in weird cobwebby shiz and over-sized frogspawn I'd be out of there. Also, speaking as a Brit, who are renowned for the stiff upper lip, keep calm and carry on mentality, if I had a weeping leg and developed an ability to sleep underwater I'd get my ass to the hospital. Would have received 1star had it not been for the standout performance from Cyril the dog.

I thought hospitals in Canada have great medical services?
Headspin20111 December 2018
So why on earth then, did Ms Bitey appear to be scared to visit one????

The acting, even by general horror movie standards is awful. Not so bad its good awful, just good enough to be considered genuinely awful.

The plot, could have been interesting with a bit more imagination, however the entire time I watched, I kept saying to myself, why doesnt she just visit a hospital? Its Canada. Your survival rates from getting checked out by a doctor are pretty high.

The effects were, as another reviewer commented, akin to The Fly, even some of Mr Goldblum's mannerisms were used here too I feel. I liked it, and the dark, amber soaked lighting added to the mood nicely.

Best part of the movie was the dog, what a cute little bugger he was.

The worst part, when our lead character screams into a mirror and it shatters and the whole apartment appears to shake as a result of some otherworldly powers which really, was ridiculous and out of place with the rest of the movie.

Lastly, they did a real number on the apartment, looks like it was filmed by Renton inside the worst toilet in Scotland.

Bite is too dependent of its gooey gore.
robbieclaravall10 May 2016
Bite doesn't have any substance to it at all. It is the type of film which advertises its over-the-top gore in order to gain cash and I'll admit, that's the one thing this movie tried to do decently. For a low budget film, there's a lot of effort placed in the FX and the horrors induced by this single infected bite. It's a bit disgusting when you first view it, but as you go on in the film, it gets overdone and repetitive. This film tried too hard to gross the viewer out by adding a lot of gooey substance, crunching insect noises and decaying corpses but the thing is, nothing is done with it in order to internalize the disturbing imagery in the viewer's mind. It just keeps on adding it, thinking that a lot of gore will gross the viewer out but it just gets rather gratuitous and mundane. But for a low budget film, I'll accept it; it did its best to go beyond any horror film in our cinemas.

Other than that, the rest of the film is a mess. The casting doesn't feel right, the actors may range from okay to bad and the script is just plain horrible. Its one of those films I believe that all the filmmakers put their effort in the blood and the gore but ignore the other aspects of the story. I didn't like any of the characters except for Kirsten and it's difficult to care for the MC because albeit she's in a horrible state she still acts grim and immoral it's hard to feel any sense of sympathy for her. The dialogue isn't done very well to the point that it actually feels comedic and makes you question if this was trying to add humor to the story.

This doesn't feel to have much of a plot, it just wanted to show the effects of having this infected bite. There are other aspects that it tried to include such as marriage issues, cheating and friendship but it all leads to the gore. In fact, it wasn't done very well in the first place and it feels hastily done and unnecessary to the film and what it wanted to show audiences which is, you got it right, the gooey gore. It relies to much on it to move the story forward when there isn't much of a story at all.

Bite feels like wasted potential. The filmmakers seemed to forget that it was a movie and not some blood fest. Every thought was placed in the gore that the acting, the plot and the dialogue were neglected, making it for a mediocre and amateurish experience in the cinema. The FX is the only thing that can be closely considered to checking this movie out.

A mixed bag of goo
fairlesssam25 July 2017
I enjoyed this movie, I had not heard about any of the hype until after I watched it so I had no preconceived ideas.

Casey is getting married and goes on a hen party trip with two of her friends. They go off the beaten track to a natural pool which is recommended to them by someone they meet. Casey is bitten under the water by some kind of bug. After returning home she notices a rash on her shoulder whilst in the bath. Areas of her body become inflamed with raised large lumps, they are painful and develop into gross pustules. She feels unwell, begins to get sick and basically gets worse and worse.

Along with this going on she has the mother-in-law-to-be from hell who literally hates her guts and a friend who wants her fiancé and steals her engagement ring.

Casey mutates into a gross goo-dripping creature that lays little ball eggs and makes a big slimy mess.

There have been a lot of negative reviews about this movie but I think that is possibly down to pre-movie hype that did not live up to expectations.

For me I found the movie a little bit slow after Casey began feeling ill. I quite liked the characters and how they were all a bit off. I was frustrated at how Casey didn't go to the doctors when the initial symptoms began appearing as that would have been what any relatively normal person would have done. If she had have gone to the doctors this would have given the movie a bit more depth and could have added another dynamic.

As the movie progresses and Casey becomes more and more mutated I thought it was really good, I like the concept of making a nest and how she changed. I felt for her. There was tension and the makings of a good thriller as her friends began to try to get in touch with her and enter her apartment.

Yes there are many flaws but it does still stand up as a pretty good horror. It caught my imagination and kept me thinking about it for some time after watching which is always a good indication of a film you have enjoyed.

5 stars for the make-up
PsychoBeard66614 October 2019
The acting is sub par and isn't helped by a shoddy script. Where the budget was used well was on make-up and practical FX.

The title card was played over loud eerie music that was blatantly stolen from Insidious (which is also rubbish).

The body horror was stolen from The Fly.

The cocoon ideas were stolen from Alien(s).

Insect Horror meets Sci-Fi
in198420 May 2016
6.25 of 10. If you're looking for something beyond another spider film, The Fly, Spiderman, or the Thaw, this adds something new to mix. It's also ahead of the curve on the zika-like infections.

Excellent visual and sound FX for a low-budget, indie film where the writer and director are the same person.

So much horror is fantasy based that another strong part of this film is that there's reality/science integrated into the horror. If you want horror that's not based purely on nonsense, you'll definitely appreciate this film.

The only weak part of the film involves the casting. With more budget and bigger actors, this could have easily been a more recognized film. As it is, it will probably pick up a cable audience and eventually turn into a cult hit.

'Bite' Is As Toothless As A Newborn
stellbread11 June 2016
After seeing the trailer for Bite and reading online articles of how viewers at various film fests passed out during showings, I couldn't wait to see it, After more than a year it (at last!) popped up on my local cable channels On-demand roster. I happily shelled out $5.99 and hoped to see a film that would at least make me flinch several times.

But like $100 pay-per-view fights, unorthodox political candidates, and most rap CDs, this film didn't come close to living up to the hype. Bite, simply put, is done in by its own excesses. When a horror film relies solely on gross-out gimmickry rather than clever use of lighting, camera angles, or plausible plot, then the element of fright is replaced by boredom, nausea or both. Community theater acting doesn't help.

Elma Begovic plays Casey, a recently engaged twenty-something who while out celebrating with her girls, is bitten by some sort of water insect. Rather than seek medical attention, she ignores the mark left behind, even as it becomes larger and more disgusting. By the time Casey realizes this is no ordinary wound, the drastic effects are manifested.

This film contains every horror movie cliché you've seen before— single females going into dark venues to investigate; single woman falling down as she attempts to flee; overblown makeup to accent the drastic physical changes of victims; and sex scenes that are not only gratuitous, but fail to deliver the expected shock—say in the manner of the bedroom scene from the first Nightmare On Elm Street.

Poor pacing and the lack of anything original makes one want to yawn rather than scream. The director (Chad Archibald) has no idea how to use shadow or the camera to build suspense. It is so drab it makes anything produced by Rob Zombie look Oscar-worthy.

If you like being grossed out, you might get excited by Bite. If you're looking for something that makes you worry about having nightmares when you fall asleep, you'll find more chills—and better acting—in episodes of The Outer Limits.

Bachelorette Parties are the Pits
dcarsonhagy6 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
A group of girlfriends go to Costa Rica for a bachelorette party. Casey is having doubts about marrying her beau (Jared) because he immediately wants children and she does not--PLUS, she knows she's still too much of a party animal. While searching for what the locals call paradise, she is bitten by something. She is about to begin her new journey...

"Bite" is a decent attempt at horror that had many good things going for it: First, the acting was better here than in most movies like this. Yes, the writing could have been a little better. Some lines worked; while others did not. I particularly loved when her friend tried to tell Casey (during Casey's metamorphosis) "People go to Costa Rica for vacations. I'm sure the doctors have seen this a million times." I will also say that even though there is not a ton of blood in the movie, the goo and puke factor had me cringing many times. I would have liked to have seen what bit Casey, but I can also understand how by not showing it that also helped build the tension.

Rated "R" for graphic violence, very disturbing images, brief nudity, and language, "Bite" certainly isn't the best movie you will ever see, but it will be far from the worst.

A film that tries to cash in on shock without any substance.
subterranean_alien9326 October 2015
I've read the same articles that you probably all have. Two people fainted, some threw up. I saw this at the Chicago International Film Festival and after the film ended there was a Q & A with the director and producer. After being asked about the stories they pretty much admitted that the fainting and puke were most likely due to heavy intoxication. Which makes more sense because Bite is a movie that tries hard to be gross and ends up feeling like a cartoon. Every surface of the main character's apartment is covered in and drips ooze and bug eggs...and it's not gross because nothing is done with it. They just keep adding more and make it drip more. A few pus filled gags and some body horror doesn't work when the make up looks as amateur as it does. Mostly it just looks like they covered the main actress in glue and maybe died her cheeks green. What's really disgusting is the acting and the dialogue. I can honestly say that the performances are almost to the level of The Room but at least The Room was so outrageous it was hilarious in its incompetence. Bite is just bad on all levels. The music is your most generic "score" in a can that you'd hear on any SyFy Channel film. The cinematography and directing is paint by numbers. The dialogue is cringe worthy, especially in its attempts at humor. Honestly everything about the film from the title card to the closing credits just seems so lazy and generic, like no love was put into this film. The budget is near nothing so I can't help but feel this film was made in hopes of cashing in on controversy and midnight screenings and I really hope it doesn't because it doesn't deliver as a film and it doesn't deliver as a shock film. I hate to keep harping on this but honestly the reason why this gets a 1 out of 10 and not a 2 is because of how atrocious the acting is. This is Elma Begovic first film and it shows, she's almost excusable, but there's no excuse for the other actors to be as bad as they are "Hmm I guess acting is just talking louder than I usually do and really enunciating words" I feel like that may have been the direction given to them. The best actor in this film is an old man with his dog. There's a scene where the dog has to act scared of the main actress to show that there's something wrong with her and that dog pulls off looking terrifying, that dog needs to teach the cast how to act. Bite is your straight to bargain bin, body horror film that can't help but be compared to other body horror films especially the fly. This is along the lines of something like Contracted which I also hated but I'd say this is worse based on the fact that Contracted at least had good performances. And the cardinal sin that this film commits is the one sin no horror movie should ever commit, it's not scary in any way. The director Chad Archibald seems like a really cool guy, he was happy to be in a room full of horror fans, he loves horror which is a real shame because he made a complete disservice to horror. If you see this at a festival with other indie horror films like They Look Like People, please support that instead because this film is garbage and deserves nothing. F*** this movie.

Wheres the bug spray?!
LowlevelReviews16 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently Bite is on a few lists of super scary movies which people couldnt even finish. I'm 99% it's on the unwatchable list for different reasons but hey... the fact this landed anywhere has me shaking in my boot.

Lets just say its one crash and burn moment after another. Continuity between scenes/takes is irrelevant someone really should have lost their job. From the bite originally being on her bikini line on her hip which moves down to her bum cheek/outer thigh area. To totally different wardrobe its mind boggling this move made it out of production.

The acting is... well... as expected. Campy, over exaggerated in some places, absent in other and dry.

You dont end up caring about any of these character, hell I made a hit list of my own. The only satisfaction was crossing another poorly executed character off my list. From jump. When this group of women on vacation in a forgien place take a hand drawn map and I'm talking like.... I'm the map song, dora the explore level map...over the bridge, around the big rock....taking them to a place which clearly isnt the place they were told to go to. I just buckled in for a ride of disappointment.

Can we also talk about hygiene....I know this is weird coming from a movie but this chick vomits straight lube... then, while riding her soon to be husband her massive infected bug bite busts faster than he does all over his hand and not a single one of them does anything to clean up. Like oh ok I'm gonna touch my face with my puss covered hand.... not everyone is disgusting can we please have this guy at least WIPE his hand!

Moving on, the scene settings....jfc...so majority of the film is set in the overly staged aparemtnents. Everyone apparently doesnt actually live in these and were here for a sopa opera, dim light, silk plant aesthetic. Someone killed Belisimo in the kitchen with a cloche. Ahhh!! Can we give these people a little personality in their living spaces if we cant actually give it through their on screenperformance? Am I asking to much?!??! Someone tell me!

Speaking of these characters, no one at any point really reacts to the orbeez all over the place, slime and some kind of membrane draped over every single surface. They walk in looking for their friend, have no reaction except a slight stank face and that's it. Can we have some concern.... this is clearly not normal so why are you venturing beyond the door. Bro shut that and either mind your business or call the authorities.

Now the deaths were the only satisfaction as I mentioned and no not how they died.... just that they were dead and we are that much closer to the end. The way she kills these people.... god. Puking acid on one, sealing ones mouth shut and yes just the mouth but she some how still suffocated... cutting the others throat and then stabbing her man with her tail which somehow impregnated him? And can we just acknowledge that while she is turning into some kind of semi aquatic reptilian species... what shes laying are fricken insects.... how that cross is made is lost on me but okay reptile woman do you.

Finally the end thank god it cant get any worse. Wrong. Let's talk about this quarantine fiasco. The swat team arrives. Starts poking around in one room while hazmat goes into another. Wearing scrubs and hospital masks to full on hazmat suits....a few goggles and some are not even wearing any form of protection on their heads. It's a mess. Swat comes into the boyfriend's apartment. Asks for hazmat and keeps on going unleashing more of these flies. Like...what...did no one actually look into how people move in for one a potential crime scene and two a biohazard situation and since were on the topic of fly release. These eggs in the fiance incubated for however long and burst out...but not a single one has hatched in the main characters apartment. Hmmm seems a little off but whatever maybe the temps werent right.

Short version. This movie has no rhyme or reason. It relies heavily on the cringe/nasty factor the constant stream of vomit and growing nest situation provides. There is no continuity with takes and scenes. No research was done to provide any kind of realism what so ever. The cast probably wasnt worth what they made but hey, having this on your resume is penance enough.

Someone should have blasted the creators in the face with bug spray and lit a match on production....

Disappointing
Carrigon6 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I first heard of this movie back in the Summer and was really looking forward to it for a long time. I loved Contracted and its sequel, and this movie seemed to promise something similar, but ultimately fell really flat.

This movie feels like taking a bite out of a beautiful shiny red apple, only to find tasteless mush inside it. They got the FX right, but nothing else was. The script was too bland to carry the plot anywhere.

It was very basic. Casey got bit by something underwater while on vacation in Costa Rica. And of course, whatever bit her was carrying something far worse than Lyme disease. This thing started to transform her into some other species.

There were very interesting FX and Casey got some new and deadly abilities. I really wish we could have seen more of where all that was headed.

The rest of the movie didn't have much plot. And the characters really weren't that likable. Casey had one friend who genuinely cared and wasn't that bad. The rest were not so good.

Ultimately, beyond the FX, there isn't anything to really like about this movie. The other reviews on here are spot on. We're all saying the same basic thing. It's not a good movie, but the FX will keep you entertained for awhile.

A movie that could have been resolved in like 10 minutes
fciocca10 November 2019
I discovered Bite by watching one of those "Top 10 best horror movies" videos on YouTube, and this film reminded me why I do not usually follow suggestions of those videos. From all the titles presented, one of the most interesting and different was precisely this one.

The story is really basic: a girl during her bachelorette trip abroad, is bitten by a mysterious species, and when she comes back home, she start to transform in some kind of big, dangerous bug. This is it. And honestly if she went on a hospital to check her infected sting, and not simply call her physician that was not available, the movie would be resolved in like 10 minutes. It doesn't make any sense, but I don't want to be too brainiac about it and let's suppose that she did not get medical attention, because in her subconscious she was already linked to her baby flies, and she did not want to "kill" them with a cure. Still two are the things that I cannot justify:

1. The movie is entirely settled in a block of apartments and there are many scream scenes, apparently inhabitants of this complex are completely deaf, because nobody call the police.

2. The two best friends of Casey (the main character), Jill and Kirsten are in my top 10 as the silliest characters that I have ever saw in a movie. I mean, it's good that you worry about your friend, but when you see that her apartment is full of nests, maybe go inside is not the smartest decision.

These are only the two most ridiculous things, but in general the whole movie is a big plot hole. It does not make any sense, and it is also very slow. They could have made a more interesting movie if they started with the Casey's story as a beginning for an international plague, or something similar, that would be an interesting movie.

I have to praise makeup and practical effects that were very good and convincing, but that's it, there is nothing more. Movie's slow, even if it is only one hour and a half long, and the ending is just a joke. Do not suggest it at all.

Nonsense, but fun
curtisjlewis18 September 2019
Okay it's not Shakespeare, it's called "Bite". What do you expect from such a title? Bloody, slimey, disgusting and retch inducing. Elements of "The Fly" and Kafka's "Metamorphosis" just not as cerebral. Watch it, have a laugh and say "yuk!"

FYI, there are these places called "hospitals" nowadays...
mariusar8 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Like some others here, I found Bite to be a mixed bag. Clearly quite a bit of a David Cronenberg influence here via homages to insect-human mutation and some quite heavy-handed and sometimes effective goo and body horror effects. The acting was capable all around with nothing overtly cringe-worthy. Direction was competent as well. So on many levels Bite works fairly well.

Still, this is one of those films where even if one allows for reasonable amounts of suspension of disbelief, one can't help thinking that a single action taken by the protagonist could have rendered the entire movie pointless. Why on earth did Casey and her BFFs not even consider rushing to the hospital immediately especially after Casey begins to notice the incredibly unusual physical symptoms manifesting on her body? She's not presented as someone like Goldblum's Brundle character, an obsessed scientist hell-bent on discovery, all consequences be damned. Rather, Casey is for all intents and purposes a typical, average woman yet her actions to her horrendous symptoms are anything but average or typical.

Does she not have medical insurance? Is she deathly afraid of hospitals? Is she in trouble with the law? Yes, all trite questions to wonder about in a fictional body-horror film, but some kind of reference as to why Casey never even considers getting to a hospital would have been immensely meaningful here. Instead, all we get is Casey making a two minute phone call to some useless, anonymous medical professional.

Huh? Anyway, maybe it's just me. Bite is a decent enough gross-out fest with not terrible acting and some over-the-top use of FX goo. Watchable for fans of the genre but that hospital thing just won't go away for me.

4.9 on IMDb is just about right.

Nothing Special
andrew-c-harrell1 December 2018
If you've seen Cronenberg's "The Fly", then you've seen the best this kind of movie has to offer . Bite has nothing on that classic , and the characters are pretty much unlivable and annoying. I know this had no real budget , but trying to get some convincing actors would have helped .

Toothless bite
TheLittleSongbird9 August 2018
'Bite' drew me into seeing it, with a cool poster/cover, an oddly interesting but very potentially silly premise and as someone with a general appreciation for horror. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there, made me though apprehensive as well as the low rating and poor reviews.

It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws those films have are present here, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'Bite' is weak, with so many enormous problems. Hardly anything is good here and a lot is wrong.

Lets start with the couple of positives. The lighting is sometimes atmospheric and spooky. Likewise with the setting.

There are reviews saying that the best performance comes from the dog. Cannot disagree, and this is being genuine and not a joke.

Unfortunately, they are not done justice by the rather direct to video schlocky way it's shot and edited and the drab colour palette, so much so it was hard to appreciate it, it was very clear that the film was made in a rush with no care or enthusiasm. The camera work is an eyesore.

Going on further to the negatives, the story does feel paper thin, disjointed and over-stretched and some of it feels vague, under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less scary. Too many characters are too sketchy, very shallow and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates.

Making the film feel bland and forgettable with not enough heart put into The sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions and dreadfully recorded), the music is needlessly melodramatic and the acting is a mix of the indifferent and the histrionic

Dialogue can be stilted and rambling, with lots of clichés, and no depth whatsoever, while the pace goes to a standstill very quickly and drags on forever with very little going on worth caring about and useless padding, never recovering. This wouldn't have mattered quite as much if the character development was present or engaging, instead nowhere near enough is learnt about the characters, and the few attempts to do so are neither interesting or illuminating, actually dragging things down. Found too many of the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or unsettling and the supposedly sense of dread dreary. Due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations when attempted, the excessive melodrama and the lack of tension and suspense. Would not have minded the lack of originality (the film is extremely derivative and in a dumbed and watered down way), if the story and atmosphere were at least alright in execution, in reality they were both very poorly done.

A lot of 'Bite' has a lot of undercooked moments lacking in any development or depyj and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or nail-biting and are pretty tame and easily foreseeable straight off the bat. The ending didn't satisfy and instead came over as dumb and the whole thing felt like an over-stretched-to-beyond-breaking-point short film.

There is not enough threat, and what there is of it tends to be used poorly and so laughably done it doesn't frighten at all. The film is completely unimaginative and more odd than creepy, with ridiculousness and implausibility being taken to the maximum extremes. Everything here is neither creative, suspenseful or nail-biting. Some badly sagging momentum too. The direction is leaden and like their heart was not in it or ill at ease, with the chemistry between the characters and actors coming over as constantly random and shallow. Suspense and creativity are zero, just non-stop predictability, monotony and dullness with overuse of unnecessarily gratuitous elements.

In summary, weak but have seen worse. 3/10 Bethany Cox

creature feature bitten with revenge
trashgang30 July 2016
Have heard that Bite was a juicy flick and I agree, the puss and juice is all over the picture. It all starts rather easy and no horror is to catch the first 20 minutes. Again I thought that this was going to be a flick about forbidden love and love affairs but was I wrong. Once the bug has bitten this flick turns into a straight horror.

It will remind you a lot of The Fly (1986) due the transformation taking place but it can't tip that flick. Still it isn't that bad after all. It doesn't become gory but what it do does getting messy. Once the girl turns into a bug her saliva turns into a killng device. It becomes acid to solve human skin. It is also a bit of a revenge flick too because throughout the flick it's shown what happened at her stag night.

If you like creature features then this will satisfy you if you think you will see gore galore leave it. I liked it, above mediocre.

Body horror soap opera
SuperKino26 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After Thanatomorphose (2012) and Contracted (2013) another bad movie where the main character slowly rotting or transform in something else without foolishly even go to the ER. Apart from this the big problem for me in "Bite" was the plot used to intersperse the body horror scene. It was basically a damn boring soap opera. A pity because the visual fx aren't so bad but the plot and lots of mistakes put this movie in the bottom of my ratings, unfortunately i'm starting to accept the idea that we will never have more masterpiece of body horror like "The fly". 2/10.

A disappointing horror offering.

Warning: Spoilers
Bite had potential - woman gets bitten by bug, then slowly begins to turn into one, but it fails to deliver. The writing is nothing special, the acting mediocre at best and characters make head-scratching decisions. The film also relies too much on the slime and aqua beads, making it seem whatever Casey is turning it more Aquatic than insectoid. Casey discovers a large, bad and weeping insect bite and decides not to go to hospital, instead she rings her GP and waits for a call back. She has no concept of wound care, dabbing ointment on a bite that's basically a hole in her leg, before scrubbing it with a cloth. Her fiancée gets unwittingly infected and pees blood, but doesn't seem overly concerned about this. He finds out she slept with someone else at the bachelorette party and then immediately decides to screw the friend who brought him the bad news. My fiancée and I were practically shouting at the screen over these weird decisions. By the end Casey's apartment was covered in eggs (like aqua beads) and what looked like cobwebs (she wasn't turning into a spider) which only added to the confusion. All in all I don't think I'd recommend this film. I saw it on a list of horror films that were difficult to watch (supposedly due to its grossness), but if you're a seasoned horror fan, like me, Bite will no doubt dissapoint and confuse rather than gross you out to the point of switching it off.
