Sun, Sea & Satan

It is difficult to believe anyone would call this nearly sixty minute rant a documentary. Bill Maloney styles himself a maverick film-maker, that much is true. Alas...Is Freemasonry really an ultra-secret society, and if so, why does the United Grand Lodge of England have its own website? And this connects with Jersey how, exactly?

Maloney begins his rant on a Jersey beach; he has travelled to the Channel Island to investigate - his word - what is said to have happened at Haut de la Garenne, which in 2007-8 was at the centre of a police investigation into historic child abuse. There was all manner of talk, rumour and scurrilous gossip about this former care home including of the murders of children. It all turned out to be rubbish, notwithstanding the fact that there were a handful of successful prosecutions, including one for gross indecency and indecent assaults on minors.

The case - or rather the allegations - struck a chord with Maloney because he grew up in care himself and was not abused sexually or otherwise. In this film he drives around the island, stops people in the street asking them questions, and make some uninteresting though bizarre innuendos about pornographic statues and the like.

There is some footage related to the police investigation, but absolutely nothing of substance, which is unsurprising because at the end of the day nothing very interesting or terrible happened at Haut de la Garenne. There is though no convincing the true believers, of which Maloney is clearly one.
