The cats featured in Zombie Cats from Mars came from Furry Friends, a no-kill cat re-homing and rehabilitation shelter in Vancouver, WA.
Writing began on October 31, 2014 and principal photography began December 6, 2014 - five weeks from conceptualization to filming.
When shooting Ice Cream Truck scene, three actors failed to show up: The two boys, and the jogger. These parts were filled in by crew members. Additionally, the ice cream truck driver was cast the day before after the scheduled actor was unable to make the 7am call time.
The decision to shoot in the basement, with a cat holding a hacksaw to cut the gas line was made the day of filming when it was discovered that the shooting location had an electric, not a gas stove. The cat was originally supposed to turn on the gas to the oven.
Since the visual effects supervisor quit the project before completion, visual effects were completed by the director/editor and the cinematographer.
