Hailey and Rodrigo's first rehearsal as substitute oboist and conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra are the same. Hailey is excited not only for the opportunity, but playing with the orchestra's lead oboist Betty Cragdale, who she has long admired. Betty, however, has her own different thoughts about her new colleague. Hailey also finds that this orchestra, no different than most musical ensembles, is not always just about the music and the artistic vision, but the working conditions which are negotiated between management and union. Just because Hailey impressed Rodrigo enough with what was her unofficial/official audition does not mean that she will have an easy ride, especially if she doesn't pull her weight during this rehearsal. Meanwhile, Thomas, who is watching the rehearsal with Gloria from the proverbial "bleachers", continues to seethe, this time over what he considers Rodrigo's over the top theatrics.
