Depressed and struggling young writer Stephen, has abandoned his life in London and moved back to his family home in the Cotswolds. Secluding himself in an outbuilding on his parents' estate he clings to his literary ambitions whilst trying to contain his inner turmoil. Over Easter weekend Stephen's younger sister Anna comes to visit and Stephen is obliged to spend time with a family he has grown apart from. The already oppressive atmosphere of the household becomes increasingly strained and claustrophobic as Anna reaches out to her brother and tries to help him. Her kindness triggers a crisis that pushes Stephen to breaking point, until finally he is forced to confront both his own demons and those of his affluent, middle-class family.
