The One. Beware big time spoilers below
shesetsail21 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Be warned, Joker Rising! Cameron Monaghan. There may be other contenders but he's got to be the one.

He's the reason for my 9 rating, the reason to watch this, just that little session where it all comes out. Great laugh, great face, great everything. He's got the Nicholson headfurrows without the paunchy embarrassment of a great actor who really doesn't know whether to play it straight or hit high summer camp - and he is much, much colder than Ledger's brilliant depiction.

Nice little nod to the Flying Graysons as well.

Oh yes, and if Dr Thompkins isn't a Harlequin taster, she should be. That girl gets just too excited about darkness and detectives.

Great Episode Ruined by Marketing
dramafreak4223 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a really irritating episode to try and talk about, because taking it completely on its own merits it's actually pretty stellar. However, Fox's promos for it completely ruined what works about the episode. I am going to have to spoil stuff to explain why, but I don't think I'm spoiling it any worse than Fox already did.

The episode, as constructed, is actually extremely clever. Because it focuses on the circus and gives fans the Graysons, we assume that is our easter egg for this episode and it lets our guard down. So towards then end when young Jerome switches into crazy mode as a clear possible future Joker, it's unexpected and really tantalizing. Or at least it would have been, had Fox not tag-lined the episode with "The Next Villain is No Joke" and showed Jerome with that grin.

The Joker link should have been a surprise. The episode appears to be specifically structured around the idea that will be a surprise. And if it'd been left that way I don't think there'd be such a split opinion on this possible Joker among the fans. We all went in going "Ok, let's see this Joker," when we should have been knocked off our feet when he showed up.

I really don't understand what the thinking was on the part of Fox. For existing fans of the show, they completely wrecked what could have been an awesome reveal. For those who don't normally watch and were enticed by the promise of the Joker, it's not fair to them either because they have to slog through almost an hour to get to the part that the promo already set up.

The episode as it stands, is good. It should have been great, but Fox screwed up. They screwed up huge.

If only it were like this every week
cherold4 May 2015
After an erratic period, Gotham started picking up, and did almost everything right in this one. The crime-of-the-week section is unusually entertaining, Fish Mooney's new plot line is in full swing, Selena is back, Penguin is always entertaining, and I like the ME's Nancy Drew tendencies.

I fell way behind on this show when some weak episodes made me lose interest, but after watching this one I immediately watched one more (that one was also quite fun, although not quite as fun as this one). Since the previous episode was also pretty solid, I'm hoping that things are back on track. This is what the series needs to be every week.

Why...so...seriously awesome?
xodanielcasterox16 February 2015
Oh my god, yes! Finally. Things are really looking up. As the trailer shows (so this really shouldn't count as a spoiler, but if IMDb puts me on the blacklist then whatever,) Bruce finally steps into the next level but is still far behind becoming the Batman, Fish Mooney- well, honestly I don't really care for Fish. I mean, Jada is very talented and very pretty but Mooney is not a very impressive villain. The only thing that I like about her is she reminds me of Ertha Kitt as Catwoman. They both share the same level of overthetop evil. And I like the idea that a female crime boss has sort of taken over Gotham for a change. Women are power too, ya know. But honestly, for me, the greatest thing to ever happen in this episode is...wait for it...drum roll, please...even though you can't really hear it...are you ready? The birth of the JOKER! Yes! Joker is finally here. And I am so happy to see him make an appearance on this show instead of being an easter egg. The guy playing him looks like a Joker but it kind of looks like he's trying to be Jack Nicholson's Joker but Joker nonetheless. And it sounds like he's gotten the laugh right. Please, let him become a big part in the show like Penquin and Riddler. Please!

Another Excellent Episode
meggibbs16 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'm going to be very brief here, but this is another awesome episode. It may be one of the best episodes yet. *SPOILER ALERT* Fish was awesome and quickly took charge at whatever place she is being held in. But the best thing about this episode, it has the joker! He was quite fantastic young joker and Cameron Monaghan was a great casting choice! He reminded me of a young Jack Nicholson. His facial expressions were reminiscent of Nicholson's in Batman. Again, another exciting episode and we even caught a glimpse of the Grayson's and, potentially, Dick Grayson's parents when they were young adults. It was quite cute to see their banter and then see them get engaged at the end of the episode. But my favorite was to see little Brucykins make the Wayne Enterprises Board squirm. He has very quickly grown up this season, which has been very fun to see his transformation. All in all, another great episode. I hope this show continues to get better. I'm a huge Batman fan and can't wait to see what the future holds for Gotham!

Bit of a 3-ring circus
Fluke_Skywalker6 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Of late it seems as if 'Gotham' is struggling to work in its various subplots in an organic way. Instead they feel tacked on, rushed and clumsy. Take this week for instance. The main plot involves a murder at a traveling circus (more on that in a bit), and sort of pulled along in its wake are brief snippets of Bruce Wayne confronting the board of Wayne Enterprises, Fish Mooney organizing the disparate prisoners of a black market human organ farming ring and the Penguin's struggle to run his new night club. None of this really works on its own, with Bruce's story too thin, Fish's unnecessary and the Penguin's just spinning its wheels until they can make the backstretch push of the season.

The main story is a bit silly, with featuring a more lighthearted tone despite the murder aspect. It mostly serves to give us a Grayson Easter Egg and to further the relationship between Gordon and Thompkins, which may be the best thing going on here at the moment. But the final twist, revealing what is surely--though it's never spoken--the most iconic of Batman's rogue's gallery, does add some meat to what is otherwise a sparse set of bones.

A clown act.
jcff-239-72806718 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The clown act this episode, tedious beyond reproach, these characters and content are getting really old, pathetic, really quick.

That Joker was awful. If upon doing a psycho sociopath, don't do it like that, or at all. Currently 12 monkeys Jennifer makes a much better joker. His mom a snake charmer, funny, but here's Johnny, didn't make this circus.

The circus was ridiculous. Robin came from the Grayson's whom were the best in the world. Not these jokers selling their dead horse.

Okay the new ME is hot, but she is also getting really annoying. A lot of air time is committed to her spats in repetition. Look at the episode photo's posted on IMDb.

Fish, the organ transplant prison. Release the knock out gas already. Stupidly meeting the boss, ridiculous nonsense. They might have charged any guns who were massively outnumbered enclosed. After that dreadful rally speech, ending upon a care less kiss. What is her super hero called, lame?

Club Mom, so many times committed to that same theme constantly. Always over and over again, repetition from previous episode. Zsasz making monkey's, but they still have free thought, enough, to run a club?

Yawn the errors are starting to show much more frequently upon season close.

Is this show getting any better?
m-478266 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm curious to know how all these iconic villains and heroes will be handled in future seasons. But let's just say that I'm not impressed at all so far. The acting is atrocious, and the writing is just as equally bad (for example, too many backstories are rewritten in order to further whatever agendas). And the show seem to be taking itself so seriously, without having anything to back it up, that it simply annoys me most of the time. Personally, I'm sick of all these 2010s shows, using the procedural format excuse to not get the story moving forward faster. In Gotham's case, it's something we could've done without. And, I know it's a show centered around a corrupt city, but exactly how am I supposed to care about any of the lead characters? « The blind fortune teller », was the first season of Gotham mastering its flawed writing, with a murder mystery so pointless it made the Joker's reveal look even more ridiculous. And a bunch of dialogues that are so laughable, you wonder if you're not watching a parody. Aside from that, Fish and Penguin overcome new obstacles (like we would expect otherwise...), while Selina, Ivy and Barbara are squatting Jim's house for no apparent reasons but to amuse fans... To think everything Batman will fight against, is practically his fault, makes this even more pathetic. On a different note, I also hope Bruce Wayne will improve as well, because I don't want another « Dark Knight ». But maybe I'm just bound to hate everything about this series.
