Goofs

The Purge: Election Year

Edit

Continuity

(at around 51 mins) During the store break scene, candy girl is run over by a van and passes under the van. Her boots fly off her body with the laces dangling as they fly away from her body. When the driver steps out of the vehicle to shoot her, her boots are back on with the laces still tied.
(at around 47 mins) In a scene outside the grocery store, Kimmy gets shot in her left ear. However, when she returns later her left ear is fine as if nothing happened.
(at around 1h 35 mins) The gray BMW that was hot-wired in the parking structure beneath the church reappears in the next scene with the door open after it was used as a deadly weapon and crashed.
(at around 1h 3 mins) Senator Roan puts the gun in the back of her pants twice.
(at around 35 mins) When Charlie & Leo leave the house, Leo takes down a few guys who are then unconscious. Leo then gets shot in the shoulder by the sniper. One of the unconscious guys later wakes up and tells the mercenaries Leo was hit in the shoulder, which he couldn't have known.

Factual errors

(at around 1h 40 mins) Using the Electoral Map at the end, The Senator already has 352 electoral votes before Florida is called, meaning its 29 votes are more than meaningless.
(at around 35 mins) Barnes, the security man, is shot in the chest/shoulder with what is shown to be an M24 sniper rifle, which is chambered in .308. He is shown not only being able to stand up afterward, but also to run several blocks and then be stunned into unconsciousness by a group of Purgers. This simply isn't possible.

A wound from such a rifle so close to the victim (less than 25 yards) would be instantly incapacitating, if not outright fatal. Even assuming that the shooter used full metal jacket rounds rather than more lethal hunting wounds, the wound would still require immediate medical attention and it would, again, be incapacitating, if not outright fatal.
At one point Laney speaks to both Leo and one of Bishop's crew on her mobile phone whilst they are in the underground triage facility. Mobile phones do not work underground and in the very unlikely event that a signal was achieved underground it would be very weak and therefore the telephone call would not have the crystal clear quality that's depicted in this film.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

(at around 19 mins) In the first Purge film, the announcement on TV commencing of the Purge, states that government officials above Class 10 are immune from the Purge Night. In this sequel the announcement clearly states "and for the first times since its inception, no one has been granted special immunity from the Purge", but the "weapons of class 4 and lower" restriction still applies: although it can't be heard directly from the announcer's voice, the rule appears on the screen during the broadcast (seen in the senator's room).

Revealing mistakes

(at around 56 mins) Immediately after the attack helicopter assaults the triage van we are informed that Rondo (the "good kid" who got shot twice by a rival gang member) is dead. However, a few seconds later, you can see his eyes looking slightly to the left.
(at around 1 min) During the opening scene, a phone is hooked into a speaker playing music. However, the icon displays the "play" button instead of the "pause" button like many devices - indicating that no music should actually be playing.
(at around 1h 35 mins) During the end of movie massive garage shoot out, not one window on any car was hit by a bullet. Just squibs going off against the concrete walls.
(at around 45 mins) During the scene that takes place in the deli after the purge begins, the cash register clearly displays a message saying "Good Afternoon" when in fact it is in the very early morning hours.

Miscellaneous

(at around 1h 45 mins) The end credits give the MPAA certificate number as 48235, exactly the same as the original The Purge (2013) from 2013. A summer 2016 release should have a number in the range 502** to 504**.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

(at around 1h 20 mins) When Minister Edwidge Owens is beginning to give the sermon at the church towards the end of the film, the first word or two of his speech are unsynchronized (delayed) with the movement of his lips.
(at around 6 mins) During the debate scene, the presidential candidates' dialogue are off-sync with what they're actually saying during long shots.

Crew or equipment visible

(at around 1h 27 mins) During the church scene, you can see the stagehand peaking from behind the curtain right after the priest walks back to the get the senator.
(at around 51 mins) Laney shoots the teddy bear purger with a shotgun and his body flies in the air. As she walks by the body, the cable used to yank the stuntman backward can be seen running through the steel door behind him.
At the end of the film when Marcos is stepping down the step ladders a red item can be seen to the right hand side of the screen (it's difficult to tell exactly what it is, but must be equipment of some kind). You can also briefly see the camera man's shadow in the bottom right of the screen just before Marcos starts stirring the paint.

Errors in geography

(at around 1h 13 mins) While the Senator is escaping the underground triage area, someone says to go to 3rd and Thompson. There is no Thompson Street in DC, and all addresses in DC also have a quadrant indicator, NE, NW, SE, or SW.

Plot holes

(at around 2 mins) In the beginning of the movie, we see Senator Roan and her family during the purge 18 years before the events of the movie. However, in the previous movie The Purge: Anarchy (2014), the purge has only been happening for 9 years. Since this movie is only 2 years after Anarchy, there is no way Senator Roan's family was killed in a purge 18 years ago.

Character error

The push dagger that Barnes uses is for wounding rather than for fatal strikes. The blade simply isn't long enough to inflict deep and lethal punctures. A trained professional like Barnes would know and would have picked a better blade for the job.
Around 56 minutes - when the mercenaries are shooting at the triage van carrying senator Roan, a patient named Rondo is shot. Laney exclaims that "Rondo is dead", however his actor blinks before the shot cuts away.
Whilst arguing with Laney towards the start of the film Joe can be heard saying "If that's not the pot calling the kettle brown." The correct expression is "If that's not the pot calling the kettle black."
