The Cork tree isn't actually endangered, and never has been.
Since wineries began switching to screw caps there's actually an over abundance of the trees, which can grow in most climates and have become popular for landscaping.
Cork actually comes from the bark of the cork tree, so no trees are cut down to make it.
The bark is harvested in a way that doesn't harm the tree, so it can keep producing cork. Each tree can produce cork for approx. 150 years, so it is in the producers interest to keep them healthy.
