In this penultimate episode, the walls are closing in on Ross Poldark both personally and in his copper mining enterprise.
Miss Verity Poldark becomes Mrs. Andrew Blimey. She finally marries her captain through assistance of Demelza as intermediary. But Francis is apoplectic. It appears as though the breech with cousin Ross is irreparable. Francis even refers to Demelza as "an ignorant trull."
The crafty Geogre Warleggan has used the tension between Francis and Ross to learn the names of all of the shareholders in Ross's copper mining venture. Francis willingly sells out his former friends. George calls in their debts, and they are now either on the verge of bankruptcy or debtors' prison.
After starting an affair with Dr. Eynes, Keren incurs the wrath of her husband Mark. Squeezing her in a bear hug, Mark takes Karen's life. Mark is now on the run from the authorities led by Captain McNeil, Ross's old army buddy from the James River in 1681. Ross aids Mark in a daring escape by boat. But the wily McNeil suspects foul play from Ross.
The only spark of hope in the episode is the revelation of Mark that a rich vein of copper is submerged underwater. It will now be a race against time for Ross to salvage some respect and some much needed capital while residing in Bleak House.
