To Change the World
lavatch8 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ross Poldark's continuing efforts to change the world are paying fewer dividends. In a noble effort to rescue young Jim Carter from the pestilential fever of the Bodim prison, he and Dr. Eynes engage in a daring venture to free him. But Jim dies during an attempt to amputate his arm after gangrene sets in. Jim and the doctor now face the wrath of the authorities for breaking into the prison.

Captain Blimey once again confronts Francis Poldark, and it appears that once again, poor Verity will be left without a potential husband. The incident occurs at George Warleggan's lavish ball. At the gaming tables, a drunken Ross is losing to Matthew Sanson when Ross suddenly turns the tables on him, exposing him as a cheater. But the trickster Sanson is related to the Warleggan clan; surely, there will be retaliation on Ross.

Many questions remain about Ross's solvency. Will the mining cooperative withstand the pressure from the Warleggans? Will his friend Mark rein in the roving eye of his bride Keren, who is dead set on sleeping with Dr. Eynes? Will the corrupt legal system punish Ross for breaking into the prison? Will Ross be able to control his drinking?

At the close of the program, Demelza reminds Ross that he alone cannot change the world, only "make your own small corner a fairer place."
