- "Nashville"- "First to Have a Second Chance"- Dec. 10, 2014
We open in Memphis where Luke is onstage with Will and Deacon, closing out his tour with "Ball and Chain" as Jeff and Scarlett look on from the wings. Layla texts a cutesy message to Jeff. Will says a kind goodbye to Deacon. Luke also shakes hands with him and then notes he has people waiting for him in Nashville.
In Music City, Rayna is getting fitted for her dress when Tandy shows up to the delight of the girls. The next morning they marvel over the success of her album and the label and Rayna says Bucky wants to extend the honeymoon tour by another six months and she is unsure.
Meanwhile, the extravagant wedding plans are continuing apace the day before the wedding.(Making sure they have enough room at the table for Tim and Faith, natch.) He is excited and she asks about the extended tour and voices her concerns. Luke says he wants to do it but wants her to want to as well and says she should talk to the girls.
Rayna talks to the girls and they both want her to do the tour. They have it all planned out, they will go to boarding school with Colt and Sage. And if they want to visit they can come on Luke's private jet. They've already talked to Luke about it. Rayna does not like this idea at all and is mad she wasn't part of the conversation.
Before the rehearsal dinner Rayna talks to Luke about the private school issue. She asks to be included in conversations about their education. She talks about everything -- the tour, the camera crews-- having an impact on them. He notes that his kids go to boarding school to stabilize their crazy life. Rayna notes she doesn't want this kind of crazy. He apologizes for talking to them without her.
At the rehearsal dinner Sadie gives Rayna a silver sixpence for her shoe, a long forgotten part of the "something borrowed" saying. Rayna can't believe she doesn't know most of the people at the dinner and that there is a red carpet there.
The girls sing a duet for Luke and Rayna, it is lovely. (Although Luke doesn't care for Maddie announcing that she wrote it with Deacon.)
Apres-dinner Rayna tells Tandy she doesn't recognize her life anymore and she doesn't know what is real and feels out of touch with her girls. Tandy says it's night before jitters and to focus on the fact that she and Luke love each other, which is enough.
Later she looks at her dress and her engagement ring pensively. She then reads the Rolling Stone cover story again. She shows up the morning of the wedding and breaks it off, and says she has to break the cycle of bad choices and she can't do to him what she did to Teddy. She says she can't make him a casualty to her life. Luke, understandably, is hurt, sad, livid. He says it would've been easier to go through with it and dissolve it after the fact. He tells her to get off his property and starts whipping chairs. She gets into her car, cries, and takes off her ring.
Scarlett and Deacon decide to check into the Peabody and stay in Memphis for the night. They watch the delightful duck march and says Scarlett's mother loved the ducks. Deacon catches a headline about Luke and Rayna's wedding but doesn't let it perturb him too much. They head to a karaoke bar on Beale St. to wash the taste of the wedding out of his mouth and tear it up on "That's Alright, Mama." She seems to be enjoying herself talking to people and he says he's going to head back to the hotel because he has a headache. When he gets there he sees another headline about Luke and Rayna and whips his glass at the minibar breaking a bunch of stuff. He then has some kind of attack and collapses. When Scarlett returns she is worried he is blacked out drunk. At the hospital he wakes up confused and the doctor confirms that Deacon did not drink but the news is bad: he likely has cancer due to cirrhosis. At home he tells Scarlett not to tell anyone.
Jeff shows Will internet rumors about him being gay. Will wants to sue. Jeff tells him to make it a lie and flirt with groupies and to "butch it up."
Juliette and Avery discuss plans for the baby and she asks him to move in for a little bit. He accedes and she gives him his old key back. He wonders what they're going to tell her about their relationship. Juliette says they'll tell her she came from a place of love and her parents became friends.
Avery talks to him mom about Juliette and how things are weird. She says all that matters is he has relationship with his daughter. Avery heads to Juliette's and says he can't do this anymore. He says being friends doesn't work so, he proposes. She agrees. And the next day they get it done, justice of the peace-style. So it's an I don't for Luke and Rayna but we still got a wedding.
Micah's grandparents finally show up at Gunnar's. Apparently, they blame all of Kylie's troubles on him leaving town, even though she didn't tell him she was pregnant. They have a court order to take him back to Texas. He is understandably upset. He goes to a lawyer who wants to stay the order and get a paternity test. He tells him to make nice with the grandparents. Later, they all try to have a nice dinner but domineering, judgmental granny isn't having it and they all blow up at each other and Micah overhears all of this and is sad. Gunnar tries to reassure him, but the worst news is yet to come: the paternity test comes back. Gunnar is not the father, his dead brother Jason was. Kylie cheated on him with Jason. He goes straight to Scarlett, in tears, with the news just as Deacon has shut the door in her face about his diagnosis. She and Gunnar hug and cry.
In the worst storyline of the show Teddy hooks up again with his escort. She says the CMA freebie was a one-time thing in order to not blur lines. He,reluctantly, agrees.
While she's in the shower he looks at pics of his girls and gets a text from Daphne telling him the song went great. The escort comes out and proposes making it a formal, two night arrangement. He realizes she's trying to sell him the "girlfriend experience" and says they shouldn't do this anymore. She says it could be whatever experience he wanted. He says his ex-wife is getting remarried and he didn't have anyone else to call to talk to about it but her and he's paying her for it and realizes that that's just messed up.
Sadie's awful ex-husband shows up to ask for his "cut" of the song she wrote about him. He is odious. Avery show up and Pete leaves. She and Avery work out a song, he sings harmony vocals, and she opens up about her tough relationship with Pete, married at 19, divorced at 25. He talks a bit about his issues with Juliette. Later, evil Pete shows up at Sadie's house and when she tells him to leave he punches her right in the face and she drops hard with a huge shiner.
Will comes home to Layla and asks how she is. She says good, busy texting with Jeff. He says she should come with him to Australia for the next leg of the tour since they're friends now. He asks who's she's texting and says no one she knows. They head to a banging house party and two awful things happen; Will ends up sleeping with a freelance writer who essentially dares him to prove he's not gay. Layla gets ridiculously drunk, this is compounded by Jeff giving her the brush off-- on the order of Will who knows Jeff is just toying with her-- and also a bunch of pills, and she stumbles onto seeing Will sleeping with this very unethical journalist. When he goes to look for her later he finds her floating in the pool. Jeff, freaked out, calls Teddy.
