Contains the only real shock of the season

Warning: Spoilers
American Horror Story: Freakshow is less horror than simple drama. I have only seen one previous season (Murder House), but although I found it very entertaining it wasn't exactly a statement. Freakshow, on the other hand, is really quite lacking in scares after the first few episodes, but it's also much more thoughtful. The season explores not only "what makes a freak?" (a rather well-trod path at this point) but also the nature of killing and questions of morality. Is this murder more justified than this other one? More understandable? What can I condemn someone for, and would I feel differently if they weren't a sympathetic character? We see murders out of desperation, jealousy, vindictive enjoyment, blackmail, even plain old sociopathic insanity, and it's hard to know what lines to even draw, let alone where to draw them. Murder House showed a bit of moral complexity, but this season is 150 shades of grey (so to speak).

The plot is seriously lacking in tension and focus, but it gives the characters a reason to interact. Performances are great as always (I especially loved Denis O'Hare). The setting is richly developed and eerie, although I wasn't quite as chilled as I was by HBO's Carnivale (though that might just be because the soundtrack to Carnivale was dynamite). Twisty the Clown might be the scariest clown I've seen since Tim Curry in IT, but Dandy, the aforementioned sociopath and ultimate mama's boy, is less exciting. Mostly because, if you've seen one Sadistic Amoral Excitable Manboy (see: Ramsay Bolton) you've seen them all. It's hard to take a character like that in new directions. I was also surprised to see so much love for Bette and Dot by the critics. I never found the character very compelling. More of a nominal protagonist who gets lost in a sea of way-more-interesting side-characters. Evan Peters does his normal cherubic hero thing, which is much more fun than it has any right to be. Kathy Bates is a goddess.

Okay. This episode. Maybe I should have posted this review on the season finale, but I wanted to write it here because this episode had the only gasp-out-loud moment of the season when Jimmy wakes up and sees his right hand missing. I think I may have had that exact nightmare because it was an incredibly visceral moment. I like eerie, but the best horror is disturbing and that was some disturbing business. A highlight for sure. Other than that, the episode blended with the rest of the season rather than standing out. NPH acted the crap outta his part (as usual) and Jamie Brewer dropped by for some gleeful cackling murder, which I enjoyed. The episode has a lot of focus on Dot and Bette, which is good for people who enjoy that character but a bit tiresome for me. Overall, very consistent with the rest of the season.

First Time Watching The Show
slightlymad2220 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I have never watched an episode of American horror story previously, however the TV spot for tonight's show, highlighted Neil Patrick Harris as a guest star so I tuned in.

Plot In A Paragraph: Neil Patrick Harris plays Chester a wanna be magician/travelling salesman/ ventriloquist with a strange relationship with his doll Margery, who arrives at the freak show selling baby chameleons, and ends up buying it from Elsa (played by Faye Dunaway) Jimmy is in jail and is convinced by a lawyer to cut off his left hand and have all his lawyer bills paid, whilst Dell (Michael Chiklis) is plotting to rescue him. Dot and Betty Tattler (Sarah Pullson) conjoined twins are desperate for sex and set their sights on Chester.

As if not seen any previous episodes, jumping on old like this might have been a problem, however there were certainly enough interesting characters in certain situations to keep me entertained. I didn't know why Jimmy was in jail, his relationship with Dell or what Elsa is selling up, but it was enjoyable and I will continue watching. I'm not sure if I will only watch while Harris is a member of the cast remains to be seen, however for now I will continue watching.

S4.E11 - The Weird Magician and Dell's Death [9/10]

Warning: Spoilers
(S4. E11) My Live Reaction / Review for American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 11 ''Magical Thinking''. The previous episode was good and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Stanley helped Jimmy to escape but im sure he wants somethings in return. He took Jimmy's hands, that's so brutal. I feel so bad for Jimmy. That magician seems like a total weirdo to me. His relationship with the puppet is really weird. The twins really seem to like him though but something is off about him. Dandy is still obsessed with the twins. Elsa wants to sell the freak show to Chester for just 1000 dollars? Elsa killed Dell? Well... he had it coming. Overall this episode was good, my rating is 9/10.

two of the three last episodes are filler
jackDee-5656519 January 2021
The whole filler episode sub plot with the killer doll and crazy guy being the main focus before the finale was a mistake, this would have been acceptable earlier in the season not at the episodes that are setting up for the finale, I really hate the placement of these two episodes right before the finale killing all or really any excitement left for it

Why does Neil Patrick Harris appear so late?
TheFearmakers13 May 2021
It makes no sense to introduce a new character when the show's about to end. Neil Patrick Harris always seems like he's performing when he acts. Like he's on the verge of breaking into song. He's horrible here, and having so much time cramming in his backstory, right after meeting him, is really lame. Meanwhile, the Jimmy story is much better. Sadly, that's the b-story.

WOW. What a mess.

Warning: Spoilers
Halfway through Freakshow I started suspecting the story lines weren't coming together as they should in a good story plot: the need to be necessary, unavoidable and the cause-and-effect of character's actions should build up to an climax. In this episode its clear that freakshow isn't going to be a great example of storytelling. In the end new characters are introduced to kill of main characters, some story lines stopped episodes earlier, not building up to a climax. Boy, it really is a mess. The acting is great, though. That's what keeps me watching. But there we're some better seasons (1, 2 and even 3).
