Very short but nicely done little stop motion piece
Woodoo has the feel of someone experimenting with what they can do and seeing what the result comes out like. I do not mean this in a critical way but the very short running time plus the self-imposed challenge of the production does make it look like it was made for the makers first rather than being a big project they hoped would hit great success.
The film sees a pair of hands manipulating a wooden block; as they do so they change its shape into different objects, from a lighter to a mouth smoking a cigarette, to a man's legs etc. As a piece of animation it doesn't have a huge amount of flair but I am a sucker for stop motion projects – there is a real earthy realism to their construction that is somehow more impressive than animation brought about from great programming skills on the computer. In this regard Woodoo is engaging because the wooden block is not really changing shape but rather being gradually changed in each frame. Although it is not as smooth as silk, it is impressive that it is not too jumpy – particularly when you factor in the presence of the human hands.
Ultimately it is a little curio piece but I enjoyed it and would like to see more from Maat.
