Summaries

  • Callie and Arizona have to make a choice regarding surrogacy while the board has to decide whether to give Cristina's seat on the board to Alex or Bailey. Amelia overhears the truth about Maggie Pierce.

Synopsis

  • Previously on 'Grey's Anatomy': Dr. Maggie Pierce, the new head of cardio (who is black), revealed to Webber that her birth mother is Ellis Grey -- a suggestion to us that he might be her father. Arizona told Callie she wants another baby. Webber told Bailey he's recommending her for Cristina's open seat on the hospital board, but Cristina left it to Alex. Webber stopped short of proposing to Catherine Avery, but handed her the ring box. Cristina encouraged Meredith to think for herself instead of following Derek to D.C. Derek couldn't believe Meredith was asking him to choose between her and his work for the president.

'I Must Have Lost it on the Wind': Meredith recalls having been lost in the park at age 5, but she doesn't remember much other than her mother being taken to the hospital and being told that she might have saved her mother's life. Then she remembers being rushed out of the house one night by her mother and being told it was time to "play the quiet game," meaning she shouldn't ask any questions, and having to leave her beloved doll behind. "It's funny, the things you can't quite remember," Meredith says, "and the things you can never forget."

Meredith surprises Alex and Jo in the middle of the night, rushing Jo out of bed the way she would have awoken Cristina. She needs to talk about her situation with Derek.

Webber is telling an AA group about the daughter he didn't know he had, and says she doesn't know who he is. He sees Amy, Derek's sister, in the group and she leaves immediately. He stops talking.

Hunt is still getting used to Cristina being gone as he tells April to "page Yang" when a trauma patient is coming in. April tells Jackson that Hunt needs "a buddy," but Jackson doesn't want to be the buddy.

Meredith and Pierce are on the roof awaiting the helicopter's landing when they meet. The wind causes some drama with the chopper's landing, and before they can get the patient onto the gurney, the wind unlocks the brakes and it rolls off the edge, falling to the ground below. The patient had gotten lost in the desert west of Spokane.

As they start working on the patient, Pierce mentions that she knows Ellis Grey is Meredith's mother. The man comes to and, while gasping, says his family is "still out there."

Hunt, Arizona and Callie try to get to the person in a car that was crushed by the fallen gurney. The man's name is David and he was due for a chemo appointment. He's in the car with a woman and it turns out they're both not wearing pants. Jo is given the task of climbing into the car to treat them.

Pierce comes to check on the patient and tells Meredith she wants to do an echo on him, but Meredith blows her off and says she has to take him to the O.R.

Bailey is excited about having been nominated for Cristina's seat on the board, but Alex shows the certificate that Cristina already gave him the seat. Jackson says he has to talk to legal about it.

Webber finds Amy in the elevator and asks her not to share what she heard in the AA meeting. She says "it's anonymous for a reason." He doesn't want to take any chances.

A woman with her young son comes in looking for her husband (his father), who fell from their roof. April and Amy find Derek treating the man's massive head wound. Derek says there's "nothing good" to tell the family yet.

David and his girlfriend are worried about their parents finding out about them having sex in the car, but the girlfriend also has a bad head wound that's bleeding profusely.

Jackson awkwardly asks Hunt if he'd like to join some guys for beers after work.

David's mother shows up and chastises her son for having sex in the car. His girlfriend is excited to get her hair shaved off for treatment of her head wound, because she's been wanting to shave her head in solidarity with David for a while.

A new doctor, Dr. Herman (Geena Davis), shows up and tells Arizona that the parents of the baby she operated on in utero couldn't stop singing her (Arizona's) praises. She teases Arizona about how she got the credit for Dr. Herman's work. Dr. Herman asks Arizona is she knows of anyone good for her fellowship, but then encourages Arizona to apply so she "can do something that's actually hard." Meanwhile, Arizona and Callie have been disagreeing about David's mother's parenting style.

Amy asks Derek about when he's leaving for D.C. Ben is surprised to hear that Meredith is staying behind. Ben says living apart didn't work for him and Bailey. Amy says she understands Meredith nothing wanting to leave.

The desert patient wants to leave, but Meredith tells him the authorities are looking for them. He's worried about his wife and daughter possibly having been separated from each other. He says it's been three days, but Meredith says that based on his level of dehydration, it's been one or two months. He cries when he realizes they're probably gone. While wheeling him to an O.R. Meredith tells a nurse what the man told her about where they were and says they've been looking for his family in the wrong place. Pierce comes by to ask about the echo again, but Meredith again says it can wait.

In the O.R. Hunt and Meredith discuss Pierce for a moment while trying to auto-transplant his kidney. Webber comes in to update Hunt on something, then awkwardly invites Hunt over to his house to play Jenga sometime.

David and his girlfriend, Monica, laugh for a moment about her newly shaved head, but Monica suddenly stops speaking and doesn't respond to anything.

The desert patient crashes in the O.R. and Meredith says they need to get Pierce and get the echo.

Callie and Arizona watch Monica's surgery from the gallery when they start talking about parenting again. Callie realizes that she sounds like her father when she talks about David and Monica's exploits.

Pierce steps into Meredith's spot and calls for a cardiac team, saying the O.R. needs to get changed out. Pierce ignores Meredith while Meredith tries to explain what she needs to do for the kidney procedure. Pierce is upset that Meredith ignored her earlier and says the patient's crash could have been avoided if she'd done the echo. She says her responsibility is to the patient and not to "kiss [Meredith's] ass." Meredith tells Stephanie to make sure the kidney is ready as soon as Pierce is done with the heart procedure, but Stephanie realizes the kidney they took out and put in a basin is gone. Meredith tells her to find it.

Meredith blames Pierce for the lost kidney because she came in and started ordering Stephanie around. Meredith and Pierce argue, but Stephanie finds the kidney in the sink. Meredith wants to try to save it.

The man who fell from the roof dies in surgery and April holds her pregnant stomach and takes a seat, looking devastated. She can't believe he was just on the roof trying to get his kid's frisbee.

Callie sits down with David's mom and listens to her wonder how parents are expected to keep their children safe after her son got cancer at 16 and then had a gurney fall on his car. David comes out and wants to know what's going on with Monica, but he is convinced that she's dead by the way Callie and her mother respond. He cries and wonders how he's going to explain it to her parents.

The man from the desert tells Derek to give him something to help him sleep, because that's when he gets to see his wife and daughter. He laments that he shouldn't have left them, then asks Derek to leave him alone so he can sleep.

Pierce and Meredith continue arguing and Webber overhears them. They both insist they were doing their jobs. Pierce tells Meredith she's over worrying about whether Meredith likes her. Meredith shoots back, "Yeah, you definitely don't have to worry about me liking you." Pierce says nothing more, but walks out. Webber finds Pierce slamming a vending machine, saying it ate her last two dollars. Webber tells her she knows that Meredith is her sister. Pierce says she was hoping to win Meredith over, but that "she's terrible." Webber tries to defend Meredith, but Pierce says she's "fine without welcoming any random blood relatives" into her life. Webber pulls out a couple of dollars and hands them to her. Pierce offers to pay him back the next day, but he says it's "not necessary."

Derek awkwardly asks Hunt about "the game last night," but neither knows whether there was one. Derek reveals that April wants him to be a buddy, and Hunt says he is tired of guys asking him out on dates.

Monica wakes up and talks to David. He's relieved she's alive. Callie tells Arizona they should go ahead and get a surrogate and have another baby, but Arizona is thinking about applying for Dr. Herman's fellowship, which would mean more work and longer hours. Arizona says she was "just thinking." Derek pulls them both away to the meeting about Cristina's board seat.

Jackson proposes the board let Alex and Bailey "fight it out" over Cristina's seat.

In another part of the hospital, Alex tells Bailey that Cristina gave him her seat for a reason. She cordially tells him she thinks he'd make an excellent board member, shakes his head and offers, "May the best surgeon win." Walking away, she tells Ben she doesn't think Alex has a shot.

Amy and Derek go find the wife of the man who fell off the roof. She cries when she sees Amy's face, but her son understands. Amy pulls the mother aside and Derek sits with the boy and tries to distract him with the spaceship toy he's playing with. The boy asks Derek about his dad being dead.

"Dead means he's gone away, doesn't it?" the boy asks, "and he's never coming back."

    "It does," Derek says.

"I miss him already," the boy replies.

Hunt talks to the man from the desert, urging him to let the nurses give him his IVs. He doesn't respond. Hunt tells the man there's a reason he survived for so long, and this doesn't have to be the end for him. The man just mutters, "Finally, I'm asleep. They're always here when I'm asleep."

"Papa," a girl's voice says. Hunt turns and sees the man's wife and daughter in the room behind him, with Meredith standing behind them both taking in the whole scene. His wife tells him they were found the next day, but the searchers never found him.

Voiceover Meredith sees the scene and says, "There can be beauty in getting lost."

Alex asks Meredith to join him for a drink and says he's afraid she's going to keep crawling into his bed in the middle of the night. He tells Meredith that Cristina left him the house, the board seat and Meredith. Meredith hugs him and says she isn't sure her marriage can survive Derek leaving.

Jackson brings Webber the ring case, saying his mom asked him to return it. Jackson says Catherine is "not great," but she's distracted by the idea of becoming a grandmother. Jackson says he's a little freaked out, having grown up without much of a dad. Webber tells him he'll be fine. Before he leaves, Jackson tells Webber that "for what it's worth it would've been really nice having you in the family."

At the bar, Jo complains to Stephanie about how Meredith is taking Alex's attention away. Meanwhile, at another table, Meredith is going on about the situation with Derek -- who suddenly shows up. He tells Meredith he resigned from the brain mapping project. He says he doesn't want to be away from her and the kids. Meredith says no, saying she never wanted him to do that. He stops her and, with a smile, says he chose her and the kids. Meredith says she need a drink. She goes to the bar and winds up sitting right next to Pierce. They catch the bartender's attention at the same time inadvertently order simultaneously: "Tequila."
