Its All About Suspense
akashks199323 April 2014
Once again débutantes proved to be good. Shyam Dhar being a new comer did his direction very well. His work is above average for a débutante. But the screenplay is lagging. Cinematography is average.

The film is all about friendship, love and a lot of money. The story revolves around a group of friends. As the story starts Prithviraj delivers a monologue saying his thoughts on X'mas and crimes. Later he gets involved in an accident with two youngsters on a bike whose behaviour seems to be odd and suspicious. He offers them help. Here starts the mystery. Prithviraj reveals that he is an IPS officer. From there on everything is thrilling. The plot is full of suspense.

As expected Prithviraj is fantastic. He has done his job very well. He investigates the mystery in an extra ordinary manner. And ultimately we are fed with answers to everything.

But the script is not flawless. "We could expect what is going to happen eventually". But still the climax is fine.

Suspense Will Take Care Of You. ♦ 74%

2014 has been a disaster for Malayalam films with every single film bombing at the box office, except maybe 3 or 4. Mammootty's Gangster is an example of downright flop.

We have been seeing lots of débutante directors coming up lately and 7th Day is no different. But Shyamdhar shines with his work. His direction is appreciative. The cinematography & editing is below average as many scene are repeated to feed the non-linear screenplay. But I liked the screenplay, to be honest and for a mystery thriller like this, it is an apt choice.

Starting off with an unnecessary disco song (with some good rap, I should mention), the film talks about a group of friends who get entangled in an underworld racket involving big money. Later, we are to know that things are not at all what they seem to be. Prithviraj pops out with brilliant performance as an ex-cop. As the story moves forward with credible suspense, skeletons start falling out & we are fed with more information as to what, why & how. Certain twists in the plot grow and make the story understandable. Vinay Fortt should be lauded for his style.

The story as a whole reminds of Hollywood thriller classics but I am not complaining because although the makers borrow ideas, they don't altogether copy it like the fashion currently is. There are many flaws but for the entertainment it provides, they all nullify. There are many elements which are shown but the underlying point is slightly clichéd. The climax is very fine. At least, the pace will keep you from boredom.

BOTTOM LINE: Recommended, for it is really good. I am gonna expect more from Shyamdhar.

Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

Warning: Spoilers
This came up on my radar a couple of weeks previously, and I've been rewarded with some fantastic Malayalam movies this year, so my expectations from this one, esp. reading the social media sound-bites from the main protagonist, where he indicated that having a trailer out for this one might do the suspense element in the movie a dis-service.

This works much like 'Vantage Point' or '11:14' did, if you've seen those already. However, it is a piece of original work, though if it had been narrated in a straight- forward manner, there would have been nothing special about it. So, being original, it still doesn't have much meat, IMO.

The technical values are all good, though a few musical numbers could've been done without. The cinematography is above-average, as are the production and art design aspects. The editing, as befits a movie with this kind of narrative, ably supports the story-telling. The performances are definitely above-average. The guy who gave a great performance as Nivin Pauly's character's harried dad in '1983' has one scene, quite strong. The leading lady of 'Thegidi' plays a key character in this one too, and her make-up here is not as distracting as it was in that one (but anyone could've played the role she plays). Nivin Pauly's character's mom from 'Ohm Shanthi Oshaana' also has 2-3 scenes, but nothing substantial.

The makers leave a lot of red herrings leading to the final denouement, including a couple of holes when you analyze the entire work in greater detail, but the movie doesn't suffer from those as those in genre would.

Some critics have been cribbing about the dialoguing that goes on every few sequences, but I felt that they had been purposefully placed, and I was happy that they were, considering everything that they cumulatively lead up to. Nice way to place a mainstream dumbing-down technique to make one's point, and having that fulfill the purpose of pulling wool over the audience's eyes.

One more thing on the score - when the movie starts out, it starts strong, very strong. And supported ably by the sound design too. However, after the 20 minute mark, it starts sounding like every other commercial potboiler, and subtlety takes a long, long hike, never to return, ending in cacophonous themes throughout. This is completely the opposite of the approach in another recent release, '1983', which started off bad (from the perspective of score), and settled into something simpler/subtle. That kinda detracted from the overall experience as well.

Verdict: Definitely better than your run-of-the-mill mainstream feature, and though you don't need to trek up to the cinema to watch it, it deserves a viewing nonetheless.

A memorable movie
ketgup8325 May 2014
Movie Name: 7th Day Language : Malayalam Rating : 4/5

The movie begins with the introduction of David Ibrahim (Prithviraj) who is from the Crime Branch SID currently under suspension. Prithvi stumbles across two strangers Vinu and Shan on the night of Christmas Eve in a freak accident and offers to admit them to hospital. One of them, Vinu goes missing from the hospital and is later found dead in what is claimed to be a suicide. Offering to help the other distressed friend Shan, David traces the life of Vinu backwards and finds several interesting revelations in the last 7 days of Vinu's life. As he digs deeper he finds out that Vinu and his group of 4 friends including Shan accidentally crossed paths with a mafia gang operating a fake currency note network causing all the issues. As the film proceeds to the climax to find out who the real killer of Vinu is and to find a solution to the Mafia which continues to pursue Shan, one is in for a real surprise for the way things turn out. David uses his police identity sparingly to extract information from others and puts the pieces together in the puzzle to find out why Vinu committed suicide and why he was involved in the mysterious activities in the past 7 days leading upto his death.

The first half of the movie is slow while the second half compensates for it. Prithviraj comes up with a superb performance yet again. He is aided well by the entire supporting cast. Background score from Deepak Dev is very impressive and apt for the thriller genre that this movie belongs to. The overall movie is dark as an overtone of things yet to come. The highlight of the movie surely is the climax which will surely hit you in a way you never see it coming. Several things in the movie are very implicit and you come out of the theater with a lot of questions. The director effectively conceals information in several scenes to prod the audience to think and arrive at conclusions. Only if one thinks and discusses about the movie even after coming out of the theater, will the spectator completely understand why things happened the way they happened and appreciate the sheer intellect that has gone into the making of this story. While it is totally agreeable that the conclusion is one of the most intellectual and unexpected twists to come in movies of this category, what works against the movie is precisely the same style of story telling which keeps too many things implicit. The film challenges the spectator to think too much on his own by not revealing a bit too much. Unless one is interested in thinking on why the story is so, one might end up thinking that the film was illogical and pointless in the first place. Prithviraj has one more movie to add to his list of memorable movie. He continues to solidify his reputation as a bankable and stupendous actor.Even if you might feel a little bored with the pace at which things move in the first half, stay patient till the end of the movie. It will surely leave you with a smile on your face as it totally deceives you.

Worth for 8 to 10 rating

Warning: Spoilers
Never before has an actor's smile changed shades and assumed a whole new meaning as that of Prithviraj. As an actor he has exercised his faculty for smile plenty of times, often translating it as a smirk, symbolic of nothing but absolute coldness. Of late, this man - who has consistently bettered himself to be the best - emotes brilliantly, making adept use of his smile with which he evokes the identity of his characters with utmost respect.

7th day, a film made with lot of heart and brain finds its fulfillment in its lead. In a film where characters are puzzled with deaths, disappearances and questions around them, Prithviraj plays a man who wears thick-rimmed glasses with strands of white in neatly combed hair. His character is destined to find solutions, to hunt down answers and to trace true identities. There are reasons and objectives held back until all of these unfurl in a stunning final stroke which keeps the film rooted to a firm foundation.

Prithvi absorbs his character with dedication, knowing fully that a slight lapse might give away hints which could foil a plot built with care and skill. He doesn't exert himself more than that is required, uttering his dialogues with a measure and modulation he can be proud of. There is a calm waiting to implode that plays on his face and he maintains that uncertainty religiously.

Working on a script by Akhil Paul which exudes a lot of verve, Syamdhar is prudent in his choice of shots and arrangement of sequences, ably concealing the nerves of a debutant. There are sensible touches of humour which the plot joyfully accommodates without ever upsetting the fluid flow of the narrative. Even when the plot drags or seems headed to banality, Syamdhar pulls it back with ease.

He is wonderfully assisted by the script and the frames Sujith designs for the film. His camera switches between close-ups and long-shots, swoops over a menacingly frothy waterfall and tends to give a bleached tint to his daylight visuals, an element that contributes to the riveting confusion between the real and the unreal, the past and the present.

its not worth 6.7 .... huh...

Overrated and Fatally Flawed!
rohan_ratnakaran21 May 2014
I had high hopes for the film, considering all the hype the first trailer created and the fact that it was a Prithviraj film. I was utterly disappointed.

I simply had to write this review to let everyone know how highly overrated 7th Day is. A story that could've made a blockbuster was destroyed by terrible writing and poor execution. And to top all that, naming the antagonist Moriarty. Why would they drag an iconic character's name into what could be one of the most boring thrillers in Malayalam Cinema? I mean, what was the writer trying to accomplish by using the name 'Moriarty'?

The supporting cast including Vinay Forrt, Anu Mohan and Tovino Thomas gave their career worst performances. Their bad acting only made the already under-written characters even more unwatchable. It was sad to see such good talents put to waste. Janani Iyer could very well be the Kirsten Stewart of Malayalam Cinema. No expression on that face, whatsoever!

The screenplay was pathetic and dragged on for more than two hours. Scenes that could've been compelling were blown to bits by over the top style and clichéd dialogues. Take for example an important scene where four characters are in the middle of a conversation on top of a cliff. After each dialogue, the camera has to zoom in on each characters face, followed by panoramic shots from various angles. A conversation that could've taken about three minutes was stretched to a whopping fifteen minutes!

The plot was plain stupid and the non-linear narrative was so bad that it lost it's way in the first half itself. The twists were clichéd and the climax was obvious.

It still makes one wonder why Prithviraj, an incredible actor who gave us brilliant performances in yesteryear's 'Mumbai Police', 'Celluloid' and 'Memories', would even consider a part in what could be one of the worst thrillers of the year. Nonetheless, Prithivraj gave a convincing performance and remains the only saving grace of the film.

Final Verdict: 7th Day is a fine example of how flawed writing and terrible acting can put an entire genre to shame. Watch it if you're a huge fan of Prithviraj, but don't expect to be overwhelmed.

Good suspense thriller
arun_mr8 January 2018
A 7th Day of the newcomer Shyamdar develops through a group of five youngsters in a seven-day start from Christmas. As the 7th day after God created the earth by creating the earth for six days, the seventh day of the seventh day, the story of the 7th Day of Akhil Paul's writings is complete. The success of the film is where the shots are shocked. However, it can not be said of a monotonous or unbelievable. In the last minute this tip is over.

When you walk into the theatre you don't expect much from a debut director. But as the story picks pace,we see some flawless performance by all the actors. Even if you are not an ardent fan of prithviraj, this performance is going to make you think twice. Prithviraj at his best. The music ,the sound effects and the camera are perfect. The film is comparable to a Hollywood thriller . And the suspense and twist in the climax is going to keep you rooted to the seat stunned. Go watch it just for the climax. If the movie dhrisyam is a trendsetter, this movie creates a new benchmark for malayalam thrillers. It's worth shelling the bucks.A must watch...period.

I am warning you .....
PimpinAinttEasy26 April 2014
..... this film is awful. Do not believe all the hype! The other Vishu releases were so bad, people flocked to this extremely loud film with the most ridiculous plot in the history of Malayalam cinema.

The supporting actors were the worst part of this film. Never in my life have I come across such a sorry bunch of whining ninnies in a film. They were so awful, I hope none of the actors ever get to work in a film again.

Once again, THE 7TH DAY is one of the most far fetched thrillers in the history of Malayalam cinema. I am still recovering after being hit on the head with a loud background score for nearly 2 hours. Despite the ridiculous plot, the film would have been watchable with some subtle direction. But this film would make Ram Gopal Verma commit suicide with an inferiority complex. PRITHVIRAJ does turn in a decent performance.

Flawed and imperfect in every way UTTERLY DISSAPPPOINTING
jacob_speeds14 February 2016
So I was just looking to watch a mystery thriller and saw this on the list and gave it a chance. There was nothing great about anything in this movie. The story was flawed (I have added 8 goofs to the page; feel free to add more i may have missed or correct me). The direction lacked attention to detail like the story. There are numerous twists here and there but they just serve to make you think that's not possible at all. There are holes everywhere you look. I'm crazy about crime, mysteries and so I know what I'm talking about. They hurried through everything recklessly and without thought. Music score was fine. Camera work was fine in most areas but editing was irregular.

Great story, Bad script and performance
edwardcullencanada17 July 2022
Tbh, every single line by Prithviraj looks forced and robotic. The acting dosent look natural with a lot of awkward expressions. Felt like he was trying too hard to project a Hollywood ish body language. Also an annoying number of English dialogues that was really uncalled for.

However, it s a great story.

Inappropriate Suspense Thriller
arvin-8370414 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I saw the movie hindi dubbed in YouTube. I do not understand Malayalam language so I watched the dubbed movie. The story is good but the narration of the characters in the film is not appropriate. Though it is debutant film it seems lack of intent in screen play.

According to me when it comes to the conclusion David Ibrahim who is suspended IPS officer reveals that Abby is a carrier of Christopher.

At the end the IPS officer asks them to submit the bag which has cash in it and asks them to leave if not they will need to surrender. So he himself knew that it is a fake currency, then why did he accepted it. This is a main drawback.

Before the climax if Abby suicides himself from the hill the and the friends returns back the body to the mortuary in van then where did the heroine gone that was not explained this is a another drawback.

But the film has the only weightage with outstanding acting by privithiraj and the climax twist the rest of characters remains average.
