about faith

two climbers. a statue of Saint Mary, Mother of God. a difficult job to be on the top of mountain. adventure, tension of humor. it is easy, at the first sigh, to see it as against Catholicism short film. but it has so many virtues , from animation to the story itself, than it is fair to discover it as a beautiful film about faith. or about friendship. or just about a friendship story. so, a good film. who reminds the virtues of old universal values. and this is, maybe, the most important detail in the case of "Ascension".

The comedy contrasts nicely with the scale of it all to be funnier as a result

Two mountaineers are ascending a great peak – but this is not the modern day and the ascent is down with a single rope and the barest of equipment. Their goal is transport a statue of the virgin Mary to the summit, however their goal is hampered by some unforeseen obstacles.

Watching this short film sight unseen was a good approach to take; the short opens with a beautiful sense of scale and adventure as the white-out reveals the mountain and the two men battling against it. It immediately feels like it will be a dramatic epic – and it keeps this tone throughout. However, what it mostly does is some enjoyable physical comedy. The laughs are fairly gentle and the sketch is quite simple, but it works because of how well the absurdity clashes with the seriousness of the rest of the presentation. It makes the jokes land better throughout and it is very pleasing in its humor.

The animation is very good too, with great landscapes and characters. If I had a gripe on this it would be that the style of animation is very close in its basic form to looking just like other films I have seen come from students at Supinfocom – not sure why this is the case, but I confess I found it a little distracting to see how familiar it looked in terms of style and movement. This aside though, it is very well presented so it not only looks great, but creates a tone that allows the comedy to function better by way of juxtaposition.
