I'm surprised to see such high ratings for this movie. But when I read the reviews from people who gave the movie 9 and 10 stars, it became obvious that they were big fans of Dawson who were more interested in propping up the film rather than review it.

. SO to get a non-fan review To me, the movie was one of the worst I have seen in a long time. Was there a plot? The movie seemed to drag on, with a couple of funny scenes throughout--a couple.

I was most offended and turned off by Shane's treatment of ethnic minorities / people of color in the film: The African-American homeless man (and two other cartoonish Black characters) was INSULTING, not funny; the stereotype of the Latina woman was insulting, not funny--unless you're a bigot; the stereotype of the Indian character was insulting, not funny. The thing that made it even worse for me was that the movie would have played the same had these characters not been played as their negative stereotypes.

It was almost like 2 movies: the beginning was very silly; the middle was simply silly; and the ending was not bad.I will say, however, that the female lead character has talent and was the best part of the film. As for the lead male characters, I had a hard time believing that either of them was into women. Whether or not they are in real life is not the issue, but it made their relationships with the female characters feel forced. Maybe it was their poor acting.

The good: the shots were in focus, lit well and sound clear. The bad: scripted acting, unbelievable characters and loads of low brow jokes. The ugly: the parts between the beginning and the end.

I can see why the producers were so irate at the final product. In fact, they didn't even want their name on the film. I cannot believe that Dawson actually won $250,000 for this worthless garbage. And what's up with the Justin Beber hair?

Epic fail. Don't waste time on this empty calorie bad flick. Honestly I find that it is truly difficult to write and fill up ten lines regarding this film. Why bother writing anything at all? Well, when a bridge is out ahead, it's customary to post a sign of warning.

Consider yourself appropriately warned.

Love shane but the long format clearly doesn't suit him

Shane has a great presence, witty comical mind, hilarious over the top youtube characters, and can relate to all kinds of audience because of his past with obesity and dealing with bullying and depression and his current life as a pretty handsome youtube star. What always captivated me trough his skits is the fact that he makes stupid jokes and fart humor but always with a cute and meaningful thought behind it, and it conveys perfectly in short 5 minutes videos, however , the problem here is that shane isn't 16 anymore, and doesn't fit in any way the role he tries to convey, He also doesn't have the look for being the popular kid which makes it very awkward to watch, not only that, but his humor over a long time span reveals to be very bland and reveals his lack of acting chops .as the viewer is looking for something more to grab onto, so the over the top characters and very many stereotyping just piles on top of each other and makes it kind of very hard to watch over the hour and a half it takes to get trough this movie. I think shane should rely on his strenght of portraying real life struggle rather than laugh at it with no real intention behind it, for he has a good eye for it.

Not Cool is a movie that isn't very cool... unless you are perhaps a hardcore Shane Dawson fan

I was expecting to like this movie going in because I happen to think that Shane Dawson has some talent as a comedian. My opinion has severely dropped after this movie.

Let me start with the comedy. Most of the dialogue is either cringey or uninspired and the jokes that are supposed to make me laugh because they are gross and random don't work because there is no sense of comedic timing or pacing for each joke. Each joke comes out awkward and forced and most comedies have jokes that tie in to the story but a lot of these jokes are not incorporated very well.

The plot is very weak and cliché in a lot of places. The two main leads have to have a fight to propel the third act and you know they are going to end up together somehow because "true love". The screenplay does nothing to help me connect with any of the characters on the screen and most of the characters are deplorable souless beings. We could've at least gotten some funny jokes with the characters from Shane's youtube channel but he decides that these boring and cookie cutter characters are enough to propel the story.

The acting is awful but I can feel that Shane is trying in some places but most of the actors need to take some acting lessons.

This movie had a horrible sense of pace and the direction is equally awful. The music is some of the most shitty teen melodramatic music I've heard.

I am sad that most people who gave this movie a 10/10 probably gave it just because it was Shane Dawson.

Shane, I don't hate you but please never do a movie ever again

I'll admit walking into this I had no idea who Shane Dawson was. And after seeing this I really don't care to know who he is. This is his directorial debut and with luck it will be his last.

Basic plot of the movie is young hot girl who has an annoying family life goes home for Thanksgiving and accidentally hits Shane Dawson with her car and they become a couple. It's pretty basic as far as plots go but that's not all you get.

Do you like screaming? There's a lot of screaming in this movie because I guess screaming is considered comedy to the people who watch Shane Dawson. Do you like unfunny stereotypes? You'll find a lot of those here from the stereotypical Indian guy to the camp gay guy who doesn't realize he's gay to the overly sexed mother who wants to make out with every boy she meets. Did I mention there's lots of screaming? Just wanted to make sure.

And lets not forget the poop jokes. Oh my, this movie is full of them. There's a homeless man who eats and drinks his own poop. That's funny right? Or the parents who are working out and the mother lets a huge wet fart just rip with a bit of an extra if you catch my drift. Yeah, poop and fart jokes are right up there on the humor scale. It goes Abbot and Costello "Who's on First". George Carlin's "Seven Words You Can't Say on Television". Then in third place poop and fart jokes. They were funny when you were 10 and you haven't grown up since.

Can I say something nice about the movie? Well it did eventually end although I'll admit I wasn't paying much attention near the end. And it didn't make me want to gouge my eyes out and drive knitting needles through my ears so I guess that's something.

But no. There are no redeeming factors about this movie. Unless you happen to be a fan of Shane Dawson and I would assume those to be 12-16 year old girls and 10-14 year old boys then give this movie a pass.

And if you are a fan, please ask him not to make any more movies.

Just an awful waste of 90 minutes

Anyone giving this anything higher than a 3 is either -14 yrs old, family/friends of his or lying through their teeth because they're a fan. It is poorly directed, even more poorly acted (with the exceptions of the 2 lead female roles), awkwardly unfunny (using another reviewers term) and highly offensive...and I'm not sensitive.

There is nothing creative or witty about it. It is an epic fail...and if it wins this contest it will speak volumes negatively of the fans that Shane Dawson has and their character. I truly can't begin to understand how anyone could even stomach it, let alone like the movie.

This movie is trash...nothing more. It is of the quality you'd expect from some teenagers making a home movie in their parents' house....But with really good equipment. I wish I could've given it a "0".I only watched it all to accurately participate in "The Chair" contest...and knew within 2 minutes I hated it...But, rules forced me to watch if I wanted to participate.

Here's the deal:

I'm a fellow YouTuber with a passion for cinema and the art of film- making and I, along with a myriad of other YouTubers, make short films with our sweat, blood, and tears in the hopes of one day have film-making go from a dream hobby to a reality career. Many of us either remain stranded on YouTube or simply grow tired of film- making. However, a select few achieve the dream and make a real movie, like Shane Dawson, and Michael Gallagher before him with "Smiley". However, both of them have helped suggest to people that YouTubers deserve no position in film.

"Not Cool" lives up to the title; the movie is nothing but one long YouTube video devoid of humor for any audience above age 12 and a clichéd story that's been done in all possible coatings. Filled to the brink with toilet humor, there's a poop eating hobo, glory holes, public sex, and a girl using a zucchini as a dildo to lose her virginity; all in the first seven minutes mind you.

I'm aware that Dawson aimed this film at his fans, who love his YouTube videos for their slapstick, toilet humor, vulgarity-ridden tones and that's perfectly fine. No harm done. The harm is done when nearly one million dollars is wasted on a film poorly written, horribly shot, terribly scored, and just absurdly put together.

The actors, like "Smiley" are faces from YouTube and the web and also like "Smiley", they help suggest talents from YouTube are horrible actors. Only Keith David and Roger Bart aren't in "Not Cool" to help carry this film.

The characters are either cliché-ridden or just plain annoying; Scott (Shane Dawson) is the biggest wooden actor who whines for 60% of the film, Tori (Cherami Leigh) is the most pessimistic, loathing, depressing, angry, annoying downer I've ever seen period and it's hard for me to even consider liking her, despite the fact she's the main character, Joel (Drew Monson) is the stereotypical, annoying "gonna-try-to-fuck-my-obsessive-crush-if-it's-the-last-thing-I-do" character and I had a headache every time he was on screen, and Jaine (Michelle Veintimilla) hangs around a group of promiscuous girls (one played by Dawson) and is the character than annoyed me the least...so positive?

Another point to emphasize the idea of this film feeling like an hour-and-a-half long is that, mentioned above, Shane plays multiple parts in this movie from his YouTube videos (exaggerated roles of a promiscuous teenybopper girl, an outlandish bus-driver, etc.) which further proving that Dawson made no attempt to mature from YouTube onto the silver screen as he claims he wants to.

Now I'm sure some reading this review will point it out being for a reality show film produced on a budget on $800,000 and that I'm being harsh on Dawson for being a young director.

My response?

I haven't watched "The Chair", the show financing it, nor the other competitor's film (and to be honest, I probably won't) and have only seen this one, due to it being more publicized than "Hollidaysburg". In terms of "low budget", I understand it's restricting, but numerous directors have produced American classics with a budget lower than this film. Examples include: Halloween ($300,000), Assault on Precinct 13 ($100,000), THX-1138 ($777,777.77), American Graffiti ($777,000), and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (<$300,000).

I will close this review by reiterating that I hated this movie, but I fully support Shane Dawson transitioning into film and the when he does his next film, I'll go see that and the one after that, because I like seeing YouTube filmmakers accomplish their dreams of making a movie. But I suggest you avoid this pile of trash unless you're a die-hard Shane Dawson fan, or...wait, there's no "or".

Shane, if you read this, take advice and make an effort to disconnect your YouTube sketches from your films; Hollywood is a newer, broader, and bloodier battlefield...prepare.

I only watched this because of "The Chair". In fact, I had never heard of Shane Dawson before. But, from his personality on The Chair, I was strangely intrigued.

There were a lot of jokes in this movie. I mean, a lot. It was rare to go thirty seconds without a joke. On the plus side, it weakens your resistance, and eventually you start laughing out loud. On the down side, such a stream of jokes takes away from any emotional connection you have with the characters. No one is serious. So it's hard to take them seriously.

However, there was just enough plot to weave the jokes together, and serve as a distraction so that you don't see the jokes coming.

But, to be honest, I got more laughs out of this than 'Neigbours' and 80% of the comedies that get made with a much bigger budget.

This Is Embarrassing...

I've never seen a movie so pointlessly crude as this one. It's almost as bad as Movie 43.

I likely would've never heard about this movie if it wasn't for one thing...

It co-stars Cherami Leigh, to anyone unaware, is a voice actress for video games and anime as well as doing a few live-action roles on occasion. And honestly, this is easily her worst role by far.

Say what you will about Lucy Heartfillia or Asuna Yuuki, at least those characters felt dignified and had some likable qualities to them.

Tori, the character Cherami plays, is just some nihilistic edgelord who's only there to make sarcastic quips and say vulgar things for meaningless shock value.

I'd talk about the story, but what story is there to tell? It's just a bunch of high schoolers screaming, cursing, talking about sexual references, making homophobic slurs, and basically going out of their way to be as vulgar as possible. There's also some random partying, and is full of gross-out.

I've never heard of Shane Dawson, but this movie really didn't make a fan. But I am a fan of Cherami Leigh, and I feel bad that she was part of such an awful movie like this.

I have nothing against vulgar humor, in fact, I'm pretty open-minded towards that kind of thing. However, what holds those kind of jokes together is context and structure, which this movie has neither.

Everything feels so jumbled together and scenes drag on for way too long or don't make any sense.

While I might understand the intention behind it, when it's not shoving vulgar jokes down my throat, portraying the awkwardness of teenagers and stuff, that's been a thing ever since the John Hughes era back in the 80's, but the difference there is that they didn't cram in vulgar jokes just to pad the runtime or sound edgy.

This movie doesn't really seem to grasp the concept of comedy and as a result is on par with the likes of Ghostbusters 2016 and the Paul Blart: Mall Cop movies.

Bottom line, it's something I wouldn't recommend at all.

An unbiased, honest review

I'm seeing a lot of reviews judging the director, Shane Dawson, on previous projects he has made on his YouTube channel, either negatively or positively effecting the reviews. I wanted to write an unbiased review.

I actually really liked it. Is it comparable to films like 12 Years a Slave, no, of course not. But I don't think that should be a bad thing. Films like Gravity and Mean Girls shouldn't be compared, as it touches completely different things.

It was a visually appealing movie, it had a lot of hilarious and certainly daring jokes and a heartwarming ending. People who get offended easily would probably not enjoy this movie, and that's fine. But to anyone who's open-minded and feels like seeing a funny movie with a lot of daring jokes, this one is yours.

Surprised

After seeing the trailer I assumed the movie would be nothing but one joke after another and not very clever ones at that. That was not the case at all. Yes, there are many gags but that all pretty much coincide with the story and the hits are more than the misses. I found myself laughing out loud multiple times and the movie pretty much kept a smile on my face throughout.

Shane Dawson is to be commended especially this being his Directorial debut outside of Youtube. I have watched his videos and could see his style humor throughout but noticed a bit of restraint. There is a lot of off the wall humor but there were a few touching scenes as well.

Shane was also good as Scott as was Cherami Leigh as Tori. They have good chemistry and bounce off each other well. Also notable is Drew Monson as Joel. He has some of the funniest moments and has some great delivery. None of these performances are Academy Award worthy but they are fun to watch.

All in all, I really enjoyed it and bought it on Amazon to watch again. Definitely give this one a chance. I'm glad I did.

The film contains some graphic nudity, lots of crude and sexual humor, and language. Sex is pretty much only implied except for one scene which is considered rape, The scene is humorous.

Don't even look at it

Ugh. I wanted this movie to be good. I always want Youtube movies to be good, because I know how hard some people work to do so. I suppose I should begin saying that I am not a fan of Shane Dawson, I can see the appeal (he sure is a looker)but is he funny? Let's get back to the movie. It's awful. I saw this after Hollidaysburg and this one was blown out of the water, hell it wasn't even in the water in the morning. Where the casting and characters of Hollidaysburg worked because of the chemistry and depth the actors were able to bring to the roles. And while it had pacing issues, Not Cool has no pacing. It starts, it ends, I feel dirty for watching it, I get a shower(x9). It doesn't help either that the characters and actors were awful. OK I should amend that. The girl playing Tori is OK and by far the best actor in the movie. Hollidaysburg, while unfunny at times, knew where to draw the line. Something Shane Dawson has never known. And I'm not opposed to shock humor, but goddam! IT has to be funny! Just because you can have a script that says (Mock minority to a theater of laughing fools) doesn't mean you can make a movie. Never since Transformers 3 have I felt like the smartest person in a room. This movie never shuts up either. It's having a moment-oh sorry we have to make fun of gay people again! Don't see this movie, it will only encourage the people who made this.

Another Shane Dawson DISASTER! He Needs To Be Held Accountable For His Crimes!

Shane needs to face the music for all he's done wrong, instead of getting a constant hall pass because he's made so many of these awful shows like this,and he knows people like Susan Wojycki(sp.) We in the industry have known or had a good idea of the perversion that he's been up to for a long time,we've even tried to get him ousted,but we were told he has too many subs to remove.... I guess that makes him God, he can do whatever he wants... Many things are still accusations,and he's still innocent until proven guilty, but he thinks he's SO UNTOUCHABLE that he constantly videotaped himself doing stupid stuff, like how he- along with his girlfriend - graphically & demonstratively taught his 12yo niece about sex, while using a stuffed "Peeps" bunny 's ears as a woman's legs!!! These are shock ing and hard to watch, every day more and more videos just like this are coming to light! Shane needs to go to jail, there they don't take kindly to people who've messed with kids! *Cue Chris Hanson!*

Not Good (at all)

If you're familiar with Shane Dawson, you'll know that he makes very "edgy", unfunny videos on YouTube generally aimed towards kids that are thirteen and under that still think swearing in every sentence is funny, and that is another reason if you go look at the comments on the movie trailer or FAQ, you'd notice a ton of his fans asking if it's rated R. I personally think it's hilarious, but unlike that being funny, this movie is the complete opposite. You'd think that after the big trend of high school romantic comedies that came and went back in the mid 2000's that people would go ahead and stop making these films, or at least throw something new in the mix but Not Cool seems to take every one of these movies and throw them through a filter that only leaves behind the clichés. Now, making a comedy movie with an awful story is one thing but making a comedy movie that doesn't have either a good story or good comedy is a tragedy. Within the first five minutes you'll be shown glory holes, feces, pee, and vomit and apparently that is supposed to be funny. This is literally comedy at it's lowest form, expecting you to laugh because "Wow, poop is funny" or "Wow, he's drinking poop, that's hilarious!" and it really isn't. I personally don't know how spoilers can exist for this movie, because I'm pretty sure everybody has already seen this, except without the god-awful 5th grade potty humour. Anyways, we're introduced to the characters which include and are not limited to Shane Dawson who talks about how nice his hair is the entire movie and has a very deep, artsy side; his sister which apparently is the "hot girl" of the movie as this really annoying nerdy guy stalks her and makes jokes that try really hard to offend you, but only succeed in offending you because of how awful and unfunny they are and we have the girl who was bullied in high school who is now suddenly attractive and who "hates everyone and is a total snobby bitch". Honestly, I can't get into enough details about how annoying, and cliché these characters are without getting PTSD. All I can really say about this movie is WOW, this literal piece of **** cost $600,000 and my ten year old cousin could literally make a more funny, smart, and better movie. I walked into this because I thought it'd be so bad that it was funny, but this movie is just AWFUL and I thought that even Shane Dawson would be smarter than use such an awful script. THIS MOVIE MAKES ME WANT TO CRY.

Disgusting and Not Worth Anyone's Time

This movie is horrible. It seems like a bunch of different skits just thrown together into one movie, but even as skits it wouldn't be funny. The movie is all over the place and has many plots that aren't really explained. For example, Shane's character is supposed to be this heart throb of the town who was super popular in high school, but nothing in the film would have you know this besides his counterpart in the film stating it once. Because she states it one time, your just supposed to believe it. It's overall just a mess. During the filming of it, they could barley get anyone to audition due to it being unfunny, inappropriate, and vulgar. There is a way to make a movie gross and vulgar with it still being funny. This move is NOT and example of that.

Painfully unfunny and poorly acted

Well... it was in focus. The sound was clear, it was well lit, and the camera didn't shake. Sadly, that pretty much is all that the filmmakers got right with this painfully unfunny attempt at a comedy.

I should make it clear that I have no problem with "gross out" humor and, in fact, I think there should be no limits and nothing is distasteful... if it's done right. I am not offended by vomit jokes, sex jokes, or any other kind of crude jokes... so long as they are actually funny. Directors, from Mel Brooks to the Zucker and Farrelly brothers to Seth MacFarlane and countless other have proved that filthy scatological gross jokes can work when they're done right.

But director Shane Dawson seems to think that just putting something that seems shocking or offensive on film is enough to be funny. It seems as if he felt that all he had to do was come up with an outrageous set up scene and the jokes would write themselves... but they don't. For example, I'm sure he thought it would be funny to have a key scene set in a public bathroom with the characters communicating through a glory hole. Perhaps with some sharp dialog or with a performance that wasn't cartoonishly over the top and grating, it might have worked. Instead, since, like so many scenes in this film, it relies solely on the set up and provides no punchline, this scene falls flat. This kind of painfully unfunny attempt at comedy makes films like "Meet the Spartans" look like comic masterpieces by comparison.

The best analogy I can give is to say a comedian can make a funny fart joke that will make an audience laugh... while an immature child thinks the act of farting itself is funny enough. This film was directed by an immature child.

The lack of actual humor and the paint-by the-numbers storyline could be overlooked, and the film could just serve as a mild distraction for ninety minutes, if it were not for the horrible performances of the two male leads. Director Shane Dawson miscast himself as the male lead and also cast his equally untalented androgynous friend Drew Monson as the other male lead, their two stories somehow overlapping. Remembering your lines and hitting your mark is NOT all there is to acting. That Shane Dawson spends many scenes opposite Cherami Leigh, a young woman who can actually act, only highlights how out of his depths he is. That neither actor is able to demonstrate that they are actually interested in any of the women their characters are supposed to be obsessed with is the least of their performance problems.

I'm sure there are plenty of 12-year-old children who may giggle at some of these scenes, provided this is the first R-rated comedy they've ever seen. But for the rest of us... we won't be offended by the vulgarity as it's nothing new... we'll just be offended that this many people put so much money and effort into making something so completely unfunny.

I really think that this movie only is a copy of a bad comedy movie. I have seen before more of the jokes, only that here that appear in another level: weird and disgusting. I was expecting that a simple guy as Shane could making a new kind of performance, not just a mix between Eddie Murphy movie's with romantic cheap comedy. The whole history about the rebel girl who after years meet the "guy from promotion"? Again? And was too long to tell that idea. I'm sorry. I hope he can make it better next time.

PD:I see the effort for put everything like the hair cut, but you need more then that to have a better review.

I'm proud of you Shane

I gotta say, the amount of passion that you can see Shane put into this movie is enough to bring a big smile to my face. As a long time fan, I'm proud of you Shane.

So "Not Cool" is directed by long time YouTuber Shane Dawson and is a very simple premise type of movie. It centers on Tori (Cherami Leigh) who simply doesn't fit into any type of crowd so she constantly has this negative demeanor towards everyone and everything until she accidentally hits a boy named Scott (Shane Dawson) with her car and decides to give him a ride to a party where his ex-girlfriend is but on the way they end up having sex and Scott begins to fall for Tori.

There's actually a second story in this as well. This one centering on Tori's friend Joel (Drew Monson) who wants to get with Scott's sister Janie (Michelle Veintimilla).

Overall this is what I'm gonna say, if you're not a fan of Shane Dawson and his style of humor then you're not gonna like this movie. Plain and simple. But lucky for Shane I'm a fan of his humor and I'm a fan of this movie.

The acting isn't A+ acting and that doesn't mean that it's bad, it's a low budget movie made by a first time director, so I let it slide. I did really like Shane's performance in it though, I want to see him take on a more dramatic role in a serious movie. "Smiley" doesn't count because that was kinda ridiculously over the top.

The humor is dark, go in knowing that. If you're easily offended then please don't watch this and harp on it. You're a bigger downer than the main character of this movie. Dark humor just appeals to his fan base more. Like Fight Club is one of my all time favorite movie because of how dark it is. If you're not easily offended and open minded about comedy then I think you can find something to enjoy in it.

In the end Shane put his heart and soul into this movie and it shows. I got some big laughs out of it and I'll certainly watch it with some of my friends that are Shane Dawson fans.

I give it a 7/10. It knows the target audience and appeals to them. That's a win in itself.

This is a Rated R movie for young teenagers.

So this movie is all about the generic slap-stick comedy and the potty humor. The humor would appeal to 13-15 year old boys.

The storyline is something everyone's seen at some point or another. The actors are mostly believable. The worst actor was actually Dawson himself, his interactions with other characters in the movie seemed forced and obviously scripted.

This movie would be a great movie for young teenage boys, but the movie is rated R, so who exactly is the target audience here?

Despite the bad reviews, I loved this movie. Maybe I'm just easily pleased, but I laughed the entire way through the film. Drew Monson is incredible. His acting and brand of humor are unique and they just worked so well; he was a perfect fit for this cast. While the story was a but cliché, I understand Shane was working with specific source material so that probably had a lot to do with it. I know that some people didn't enjoy this as much as I did but I can't really understand why. I've seen movies that were 10xs worse than this; ie the Scary Movie series, Date Movie, etc. "Not Cool" held it's own and I can genuinely say I enjoyed it and I'm glad I watched!

Not being a huge fan of Shane made me like him even better. I've only seen a few of his videos, but when this showed up, I saw the ratings and I just HAD to buy it!

This movie was very visually pleasing and heartwarming in places. I love the humor used in this, as it connects with others.

With everything going on, it was a bit hard to keep up with the plot in some places, but I still found it very enjoyable. The story itself was hilarious and touching. It was disgustingly beautiful in places.

Bravo, Shane. Bravo.

This film deserves to be erased from history. Or used as toilet paper to wipe the giant compacted disgusting rectum this giant turd was extruded from.
