- Ichabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills concoct a daring plan to try to rescue Ichabod's wife, Katrina, from the Headless Horseman by resurrecting a Frankenstein-like monster created by Benjamin Franklin. Meanwhile, Frank Irving faces new trouble after revealing the true details of his encounter with a demon, and Jenny Mills finds herself at odds with the new sheriff in town.—Jiilo_Kim
- The Headless Horseman drags Katrina to two stakes in the woods, surrounded by a circle of flames. He chains her to them. Henry arrives and explains they're going to sanctify her bond to Abraham. Henry immobilizes Katrina with power and then slices her hand, letting Abraham bleed into it. "You must be like him in every way," Henry says as Abraham picks up his broad axe and swings it at her head.
Crane wakes up from his nightmare with a start. But then he explains to Abbie that he read about the ritual and is sure it's what Abraham has planned for his wife. But first they have to find the Horseman.
They've narrowed the search area down to where he could have ridden on horseback before the sun rose. When Crane mentions Abraham's expensive taste, Abbie wonders if he's holding Katrina some place befitting that lifestyle.
Abbie is called into work. A new sheriff has been appointed to replace Captain Irving. Crane urges her to make friends.
Abbie reports to the station and gets an instant grilling from Captain Reyes, who is determined not to let fear rule Sleepy Hollow. She mentions responding to calls about Abbie's mom when Abbie was very young. Reyes began in law enforcement in Sleepy Hollow before going to the Border Patrol.
Crane stops by the station with a memory about Abraham proposing to Katrina at his family's estate in Willow Point. It's now Dobbs Ferry.
On the way there, Abbie worries that rescuing Katrina is them losing sight of fighting the war against Moloch. Crane explains Katrina is a powerful witch who could help in the war, but he also has a duty to her as her husband.
They arrive at the estate at night and see the altar prepared for the ceremony. They confirm the Horseman and Katrina are there, but Abbie forces Crane to leave and return when they have a plan.
Back at the cabin with Jenny, she notices a drawing in the codex lost gospel in which Crane read about the ceremony. It's the Kindred "a creature assembled from the parts of deceased soldiers. A patchwork creation believed to be a match for the Horseman of Death."
It also appears in Benjamin Franklin's notebook. He describes the Sisterhood of the Radiant Heart, Katrina's coven, using a spell to create the Kindred. Franklin assembled the body to contain death's spirit. But they never completed the spell because they lacked a key component -- a body part of the Horseman himself. Crane and Abbie just happy to have that -- the Horseman's head. But Abbie is worried about raising monster.
Sitting at his desk, Henry is summoned by Moloch. Henry genuflects and apologizes for failing to find a way for him to cross over. Moloch says, essentially, he'll handle it from here.
At the cabin, Abbie and Jenny have serious reservations about raising the Kindred, but finally agree it's their best bet. Franklin's journal notes he preserved the body, so Crane sets off to find it while Jenny goes to get their cache of weapons from the tunnels.
Back with Abraham (who she sees with his human face thanks to a spelled necklace he put on her), he taunts her by telling her Crane saved Abbie from purgatory but hasn't come for Katrina. He tries to sow jealousy. He tells her Moloch has a plan for them, and he hopes she goes along willingly.
Abbie visits Irving in jail, and quickly sees that he's been beaten. She asks him where he hid the head and quickly catches him up on things, minus raising the Kindred. It's in a bank security box.
Crane and Abbie retrieve it.
Back at the archives, Jenny is interrupted by Captain Reyes, who points out the archives are on police property. Reyes knows Kenny's file, including that she escaped from the psych ward and flipped her car last week -- Jenny doesn't explain that actually the Headless Horseman did that. Reyes takes one look in Jenny's weapons cache and arrests her.
Later, Crane and Abbie go to the station to get the weapons and Jenny. But Jenny doesn't let Abbie take responsibility for the weapons. Reyes questions the need for Crane, the "history consultant" to be part of any investigations. Crane and Abbie leave, off to fight the Horseman with Jenny in jail for the time being.
Irving undergoes a lie detector test, in which he says a demon killed the people he confessed to killing. Reyes thinks Irving is lying to get transferred to the psych ward from superman prison. She promises him the latest in hallucination therapies, including shock therapy.
Down in the tunnels trying to find Franklin's soldier patchwork, Abbie and Crane wander around. A swarm of bats reminds Abbie of purgatory and she tells Crane how the experience ate at her and she nearly broke when she saw the demon version of him. "My faith in you is my greatest weakness," she says. As for Crane's weakness, Abbie thinks he chose to take on the Horseman and go after Katrina instead of Henry because, despite everything, Henry is still his son.
Abbie notices metal plates on the wall, but Crane stops her from touching them. They are the family crest of an Italian inventory named Galvani, who invented the battery. The plates are charged. Abbie pushes a button and the wall opens up and a coffin slides out. Abbie dubs him "Franklinstein's monster."
At Abraham's estate, Katrina talks to her son, who tells her Crane's delusions are going to get him killed. Henry knows Crane is on his way. "They're coming to save you. The question is, Who will save them?" Henry says.
Nearby the house, Abbie and Crane prepare to raise the Kindred at dark and let him take on the Horseman while Crane goes in to rescue Katrina. The Horseman's head's eyes fly open as they place it on the Kindred's body. Crane knows it might mean the Horseman knows they're there.
Crane begins the incantation.
Inside, Abraham ties up Katrina, promising her Crane's life will end on the eve her new life begins.
Meanwhile, Henry summons his warrior proxy to fight.
Crane finishes the incantation to raise the Kindred. But nothing happens. He begins again.
Back with Abraham, Katrina tells Abraham she wanted to marry him but he rushed her. Ichabod gave her all the time in the world. "He was an escape route that turned into a husband," she says. She begs him not to let his impatience ruin them for a second time. "Let me accept of my own free will," she says. He assents.
As night has fallen, Crane is finishing the incantation when they see the Horseman approaching. The Kindred begins to rise and takes on the Horseman.
Crane runs inside to rescue Katrina. He unties her but she quickly explains that he has to leave her there. She's convinced Abraham to wait to perform the ritual and thinks she can gather information on Henry and Abraham's new plan to raise Moloch if she stays.
Meanwhile, as the monsters fight, Henry's warrior arrives to take on the Kindred, making it two against one. Abbie starts firing on Henry's warrior, but only succeeds in making him angry. The Kindred skewers the Headless Horseman on something and is about to attack when he sees Henry's fiery warrior bearing down on Abbie. He rushes to intercede, allowing her to escape.
Back with Crane, Katrina pleads with him to let her attempt to save their son Henry from his dark path. He kisses her as she tells him how much it pains her to leave him.
Abbie rushes in to tell him they have to go and is thoroughly confused when Crane leaves Katrina there.
Back outside, the Kindred sees Abbie and Crane leaving and races off after them .
When Abraham returns to Katrina, who he at first thinks is gone. She tells him she can see he'll follow her anywhere so this is her place for now. When she mentions this isn't her world anyway, he says she's wise not to acclimate to it since it won't exist for long.
At the cabin in the morning, there's been no sign of the Kindred. Abbie loves the idea of having Katrina with Henry and the Horseman as a mole. She assures Ichabod that Katrina will be OK.
Abbie goes to visit her sister, thanking her for taking one for the team. But with Reyes watching them like a hawk, she can't get Jenny out and asks her to sit tight.
Reyes visits Irving in the psych ward. Two more decapitated bodies showed up last night and she thinks he knows something about it. "I used to be just like you. I thought I had it all figured it out, but then I came to Sleepy Hollow. But now that I've seen what I've seen, I'm not going to pretend to be blind again. The end is near," he says.
They're interrupted by a man who introduces himself as Irving's lawyer -- Henry Parrish. (Irving doesn't seem to recognize him.) He presents Reyes with an injunction preventing all involuntary treatments.
Left alone with Henry, Irving thinks his wife hired him as his new lawyer. Henry hands Irving paperwork to sign, and a fountain pen that he was working on earlier. It pricks Irving and makes him bleed. Henry reminds the small pin he planted and hands it back and Irving signs something in blood.
