Alice Armstrong is receiving electric shock treatment for memory loss after her accidental shooting her mother. Six weeks after her mother's death her father Sir Aaron is also found dead from a blow to the head, his hands tied. Suspicion falls on Jim Magnus, the chauffeur and a former petty crook and on Peter Royce, the secretary, who loves Alice and was sacked after telling Sir Aaron not to send her back to hospital. But a conversation with debt collector Eddie Monk informs Father Brown that the dead man owed huge sums of money and another confession suggests that Sir Aaron tied his own hands. With the death solved Alice then recollects that she was not responsible for her mother's slaying.—don @ minifie-1

Father Brown looks into the apparent murder of one of his parishioners, Sir Aaron Armstrong, who is found under a bush with his hands bound. It had been a difficult time for the Armstrong family. His wife was recently killed in a hunting accident, accidentally shot by his daughter Alice, who subsequently underwent shock therapy. The main suspects in Sir Aaron's death are his chauffeur Jim Magnus and his secretary Peter Royce. Insp. Sullivan eventually arrests both of them assuming they were in it together. Sir Aaron Armstrong fires his devoted, competent secretary Peter Royce when found out as lover of his amnesiac daughter Alice, who seems inconsolable after killing her mother in a hunting rifle accident six weeks ago. Shortly after, sir Aaron is murder on his estate in an unclear way.
