Fantastic episode. The return of Flambeau.
Sleepin_Dragon17 July 2017
Eccentric Professor Ambrose sends a mystery package to Father Brown, soon after he's abducted, Ambrose had an inkling of the whereabouts of an invaluable Rosary.

This episode I would class as excellent, I loved the story, it's very different to those that have gone before, it's wonderfully cryptic and keeps you asking if and when Flambeau will turn. The directing is superb, the camera work and use of music are first rate. It's the assembled cast and acting that boost this episode, Flambeau's return is hugely welcomed. Anton Lesser, Sylvestra Let Touzel, James Laurenson and of course John Light are all brilliant.

A quality episode 9/10

The Mysteries of the Rosary

This one is certainly Indiana Jones meets The Da Vinci Code as Flambeau returns claiming to be on a mission on behalf of the Vatican. It is enough to make a priest swear.

The eccentric Professor Ambrose is missing believed abducted. He had been researching the long disappeared Lannington rosary believed to have mysterious healing powers.

Father Brown and Flambeau look for clues in an ancient prayer book while the Professor's kidnappers are not too far behind. Then there is an old friend of Father Brown, tipped to be elevated as Monsignor who is behaving very oddly and looks to be under the weather.

Once again the appearance of Flambeau elevates the show, he is cunning and conniving. As soon as he shows up in the pub, he has charmed a lady so fast he even makes Sid envious.

Cryptic adventure

The mysterious disappearance of an old friend sends Father Brown and Sid on a quest to find the mythical Lannington Rosary. However can an old adversary, back from the dead, be trusted to help?

This is a little different from the other Father Brown episodes with less murder mystery and more cryptic puzzles and adventure. It's well-written with some great set pieces - loved the secret tunnel. The character Flambeau returns in another episode.

Interesting and different

Starts with a man mailing a package to Father Brown. He goes back to where he lives and his place is torn apart. He is like a historian so his papers are all over the place as if someone is looking for something.

Father Brown stops off to visit the man who was missed at a gathering. The police are also there. The man is missing Father Brown finds a handkerchief that smells of chlorine, he feels his friend was kidnapped.

This episode all has to do with Rosary Beads that were made with expensive stones and a nun that professed they caused miracle healing.

Some participants want the Rosary for money some want it for miracles.

What is interesting is that there is a man in it called Flambeau who is like the Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes stories. Flambeau is a smart crook. Father Brown meets him at different times to convince in to change his life around.

As I watch more episodes Father Brown seems more sincere about his character as a priest. He still makes too many "Signs of the Cross" on his chest which after awhile seems repetitious with no meaning but is seems there is less of that now and more about repentance of sin.

There are two characters in this series I do like both play a priest. One is Malcolm Storry who plays Bishop Talbot and is in more than one episode. He gives me the creeps and I don't like him playing the part of any holy man. The other is Anton Lesse. Lesser plays a snotty policeman in the series Endeavor.

There are two regular female characters one is Mrs McCarthy a good cook and a gossip the other is a Lady Felicia who is rich and sleeps around a lot and Father Brown knows about it. They are like his sidekick. The give him clues to crimes usually by accident. But but but, he never ask them to repent of their sin. Kind of hypocritical.

All in all though this episode was not bad.

Warning: Spoilers
I won't even both commenting on this episode (which was very good) because the ending was the best part, very funny indeed and sets up another return for Flambeau in the future. What an episode!

John Light returns
safenoe3 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Sylvestra Le Touzel guest stars as Verity Penhallick in The Mysteries of the Rosary, from the second season of Father Brown. John Light makes a welcome return as Hercule Flambeau, who makes an impression on a young blonde woman, and later on you can hear the banging loud near a room that Father Brown and Sid are lodging in. I don't think the young blonde woman is credited in imdb.

Father Brown and Sid share the same double bed, and there's no qualm or suggestion of anything strange about that, such was the innocence of the times.

The Mysteries of the Rosary has an emotional ending with very spiritual overtones.
