- Father Brown is concerned when one of his parishioners, the endearingly eccentric Professor Hilary Ambrose, isn't seen for several days. - While priest Ignatius is celebrated by the bishop and raised to Monsignore for running his 'mission' for wayward boys, Brown receives a letter demanding as ransom for his retired academic cleric friend professor Hilary Ambrose the priceless, long-missing renaissance rosary made for the ancestor of estate heiress Verity Penhallick, allegedly with miraculous healing power. Brown also receives the Marian prayer book which Ambrose sent him, containing the crucial clues. Brown gets the free services of lady Felicia's rascal Rolls Royce driver Sid and the master jewel thief Hercule Flambeau whom the police presumed dead, but claims to have been hired by the Vatican and promised a papal dispensation.
