Bisgaard duly suspended Catherine's status, yet hands her and Jerry Molbeck student Joff Soika's apparently routine jump-suicide case. This turns out to fit the designer drug MO of the life-jailed serial killer who was Thomas's first book subject. During a new jail interview, Thomas is convinced their are more victims and a way to kill again, which threatens his family, so son Johny and his mother are hastily sent to relatives out of town. Meanwhile Catherine's mother is terminally comatose after a fall witnessed only by her stepfather Howard.
