Another frustrating episode, full of decent ideas poorly done.It opens with a flash forward of Astrid in danger, which surprisingly pops up only halfway through the episode, even if it is resolved the way most of the audience imagined(the only surprise being that it was John rather than Stephen who saved her and that's obvious after the first ten minutes).The end result is John being shot so he can't teleport, leaving him and Astrid hiding from Ultra agents.The obvious solution: Have someone teleport in and teleport out with them.After a lot of babble about how they can't do that because they'll be detected, and the thing being dragged out still further because Cara went in on her own instead of bringing one of the Tomorrow People who are just standing around doing nothing when Astrid turns up, Cara basically does that anyway.(And even then she nearly gets them killed by standing around chatting instead of just getting out of there.)Moving Astrid into the lair is a nice idea and having the show's most human and least human regulars interact is another nice one.The amateur surgery and cringeworthy singing...not good ideas.
There's also a plot line about John getting someone killed as a child, which takes pretty much the entire episode to get to the obvious conclusion.John and Stephen sharing memories feels like the show's already linked Stephen to all the female regulars so they're going to get the slash fans excited.Jedekiah comes across as a deluded monster and Hillary just fades into the background after setting things in motion.
Oh and the Z-plot about Stephen's mum having a boyfriend who may or may not be a telepath meanders around through a load of contrived incidents, chief among them being the fact that no-one seems bothered about suddenly losing telepathic contact with Stephen, before ending on a surprise reveal that most reviewers were asking about in the pilot. You don't have to be an idiot to enjoy this episode but you probably do to write it.
