"Verax" is a very timely film. It's all about the recent media sensation, Edward Snowden. Snowden, if you don't remember, is a guy who worked for the CIA and NSA and recently spilled his gut about how afraid he is about the far-reaching spy powers the agencies are exerting. US government officials have mostly condemned him and there have been efforts to extradite him. He is, last time I heard, hiding out in Russia. However, the film does not really explain Snowden's case all that thoroughly but instead consists of actors playing various US and Chinese intelligence agents who are working on the Snowden case. I would have probably preferred if the film had focused more on Snowden's specific concerns, though this style of film making was more cinematic and I appreciated the film very much. Now I am not saying it's a great film. It's obvious the folks who made it are relatively inexperienced--as the music is too invasive and loud and a few of the actors seemed uncomfortable in front of the camera--all things that can be worked out in future productions.
I would really like to see either a much longer film about the Snowden affair or a followup--and I am hoping these filmmakers give it a try.
